Problem with sort order when switching galleries??

I have tried using different default sort orders for some of my galleries using the "Custom List Page Default Settings" in Exhibition Editor. However, this setting gets ignored when switching between galleries from the drop down list on the Exhibition Thumbnail page and insted the current setting on the thumbnail page is used for every gallery. Is this working as it should?

If I navigate dirsctly to the gallery then the display does use the default for that gallery

2 example galleries are:
http://www.gillyworld.co.uk/ee15/list.php?exhibition=26&pass=public&lang=eng which used Authors order as the default
and
http://www.gillyworld.co.uk/ee15/list.php?exhibition=27&pass=public&lang=eng which uses publish order as the default

This is as designed. The default settings are used when entering that gallery via an external link or EE front page. When you are already in, all your search selections and output choices are kept between galleries. Otherwise it would be very confusing to get settings changed totally each time when you change galleries.

Thanks - not exactly what I wanted to hear but I do have a follow up question which is:
What determines the starting point for the Authors Photo Order. In the galleries I have set up it doesn't seem to be any of the obvious orders such as Published Order, File name order, date order in fact it looks to be somewhat Random.

Let me clarify my decision a bit. It is not meant to annoy people but make visitor's life easier.

To design a browser system is very complex - you have to think how person who browses the photos experiences various features.

1. You arrive to a page which has detail list, 10 per page and order by camera.
2. You set display to thumbs and order by date.
3. You change exhibition.
4. Now you have 4 thumbs per row, 20 per page and order by lens (NOT EXPECTED)
5. You set display to thumbs, 10 per page and order by date (EXTRA STEP)
6. You change exhibition.
7. Now you have microthumbs list, 30 per page and order by country (NOT EXPECTED)
8. You set display to thumbs, 10 per page and order by date (EXTRA STEP)
9. You change exhibition.
etc.

OR

1. You arrive to a page which has detail list, 10 per page and order by camera.
2. You set display to thumbs and order by date.
3. You change exhibition.
4. You change exhibition.
5. You change exhibition.
6. You change exhibition.
etc.

Which is my book is how it should be. The custom list page default settings are useful when you e.g provide clients private galleries and you want to e.g. sort them by date without affecting main galleries.

Of course if we'd had get "set to gallery defaults" button we could have have a partial solution to this.

If you have good ideas with solid logic about this I'm happy to hear them and execute them if the prove to be better than present system.

In editor set order in exhibition you set the order and default direction is set in misc settings' photo browser settings.

I don't think I explained my question properly, I understand using the Photo Order in Exhibition and the direction in Misc Settings. My question is concerning the order that the pictures are first shown when you go into the Photo Order in Exhibition panels to create the custom order. This seems to be random. What I want to know is if I were looking at the Numeric Order setting in the Photo Order Panel, what criteria sets the initial number alloacted to each picture? Perhaps what is needed is a sort order drop down box on the Photo Order in Exhibition page to give starting options for a custom order.

On your first point, its a judgment call for the design, I fully understand what you are saying about making life easier for the end user browsing a gellery, however the photographer might also want to direct the people viewing his pictures to view them in a particular order particulrly if the order is important to the context of the pictures. I know that you are considering adding a slide show function at some time in the future, order could be quite important for a slide show. A reset to gallery default button might be a way of addressing this in the future.
