I am looking at buying a light meter and was wondering if anyone could tell me what features I am looking for. I have browsed other post on this topic and have seen the recomendations on which types to buy but I would like to know what features to look for specifically. Thanks.

Stating what you might want to do with the meter, or what sort of photography you accomplish (or wish to accomplish) would be important to make a recommendation.

I do mostly portrait work.

Well, I guess I need to make a guess here.
If this work is with flash, I suggest a Sekonic L-308. It has both incident and reflective mode, and flash meter function.
It is an accurate, light, compact, and relatively inexpensive meter (about $180.00).
You can get meters with more features, but they cost more.
The Sekonic 308 will get the job done for most photographers with a minimum of cost.
Enjoy! Lon
