View Full Version : Original 1D versus mk2, 5D, etc

I have been using a 1D mkI for about a year now and what I like most about it is that I can shoot jpeg or RAW (I almost always shoot raw just in case) and I only have to do some resizing and a little sharpening to have them ready for the web, or whatever. Contrast, levels, white balance are either very close to perfect or perfect when using available light.

Now that I'm considering an upgrade, Can I expect this from any other camera?

I'm thinking of either the 5D or the 1D mkII (not N, unless it drops a lot in price)

Obviously both have added benefit and they don't really compare for features and uses. I'm leaning towards the 5D. Either way, this is important to me.

Thanks

Colours. Shooting alongside KevC for a month (who owns a 1D) sowed me that the colours (red channel mostly) are vastly improved on the newer models. I was shooting with a 1Ds.

The extra res makes a big difference if you want to print natively at 8x10 or more....

But, in the case of the 1D mkII, doesn't it have basically the same sensor as a 20D? I found I had to do a lot of post on my 20D, but maybe that is remedied by the better meter in the 1-series?

I do have a dog and enjoy taking her photo, so I do appreciate the 8fps on the 1D. I may have to keep the 1D if I go with the 5D as an upgrade...

the 1d uses a 1.3 crop sensor (aps-h?) and the 20d is a 1.6 crop (aps-c). If I remember correctly, the pixel count is "slightly" different

Manual mode man. AV and TV are just paths to more work.

I think the 5D will allow about the same post process time...

I'm going to be the odd man out here,
I found the 1D "Classics" 4.5MP CCD sensor images to be more "finished" straight out of camera than any of the CMOS cameras I have used including the D60, 10D, 20D, 1D MkII

Something about that old CCD always seemed to equal a less post work. It was more like it had some of the advantages of a good P&S in that regard IMHO.

I agree. The skin tones on an untouched 1D jpeg are usually dead on accurate.

Definitely the reds. Maybe it's just whatever paramter settings I shoot at. I don't even bother reading about all that... Now that I'm home I shoot completely staged events and it's all RAW for me all the time =)

At ISO200 the colours are beautiful. I actually like the low density, low resolution files from the 1D. There's something about them.

I agree with the statement about the smaller files... Look I have a 320 GB external that is almost full and a whole bunch of disks of backup too... I would hate to have to but a 1TB to cover the larger file size right now as money is an object for me... That being said ... I will do it when I can...

A whole lot more resolution with either one

I find my 1D and 5D compliment each other. For sports and weather the 1D is hard to beat, while the IQ of the 5D is off the charts, great. High ISO is amazing. I'm keeping both.
