I’ve read some good reviews on it, and I'm wondering if you need to purchase the canon module in order for it to function properly.

I can't answer your question on the Radio Slave but I can tell you that I use the Pocket Wizard Plus with my 10D and studio lights as well as my 550EX in Manual mode without problems. Quantum is a reputable company. They make great flashes. I use their Q Flash.

I've used Quantum 4i with my 10D in studio - works like a charm. Of course you don't get the wireless-TTL that you get with multiple 550EX's.

The newer Quantum FreeWire slaves require a module to work as TTL, but they don't work with digital cameras because of the pre-flash which is necessary with digi-cams.

All in all, 4i's are a great thing if you shoot in a studio or if your relationship changes with respect to lights.

If you are shooting in the studio (or intend to in the near future) get a Pocket Wizard transmitter and buy power packs with built-in receivers. Less cords, less bateries, less head aches.
