Yeah, the L series lenses are not "snow white", they are more of a "grey white". I have the 70-200 IS and it is more of a "grey" colour.
I am sure that the ladies on this forum will have a bigger colour vocabulary to describe it. It's funny how guys will say, "that car is blue" and girls will say, "that car is a duck egg blue".

There's always Rustoleum spray white to touch it up.

They made it that color as a constant reminder of what the camera sees :)

it's not exactly 18% gray. I'd go for the Rustoleum.

What about the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS - is this lens silver gray as shown on the web? - or is it white?

I have the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS and it's off white. I kinda like fire engine red but they don't come in that color! Of course I could do the rustoleum thing! I wonder if the birds I shoot with it would notice the difference!!!

they are all off-white in colour. People often post threads with this question, I suppose if you have never been close to one in the flesh before you get your first one delivered, it is a natural response.
Rest assured, it's not dirty!

You see these lenses at football games, etc. In the harsh light, they look white. But they are actually an off-white color.

Thanks everyone for the info, as its the first L lens i have ever seen in real life.
I was a bit concerned as i brought it off e-bay that it was some type of copy.

Wouldn't it be great if cheap, knockoff lenses were as tack sharp as the 70-200 f/4 IS?:D:D:D

Now, you may ask yourself "why are they white to begin with?"; the reason being that it makes you look cool and people will want to be your friend for being so cool. At least that's what it saids on the Canon site. :)

Too funny does it really say that  ?
Well, it does a good job of reflecting light, which in turn keeps the glass inside cooler and prevents the elements from changing shape. So I think of it as an advantage :) .

Do not worry it is the normal color.I think Sony and Nikon make more white lenses. If you do not like the grey color then you could go for a Sony or Nikon.

Wouldn't it be great if cheap, knockoff lenses were as tack sharp as the 70-200 f/4 NON IS?
There.. I fixed that for you. ;)
Everyone knows that the 70-200 f/4 non IS are sharper than the IS flavors.:p
