I took this picture of my daughter and did not like the way the colors ended up. It was also kind of soft due to slow shutter and unsteady hands. I converted it to BW in order to try to salvage it. What do you guys/gals think of it in BW?

There seems to be very little tonal value in the foreground (other than your daughter) and the background seems to have more tonal values, it seems odd to me.

I'm also not sure about the composition I feel there are too many verticals - had your daughter been standing at an angle to the wall it might have helped. I also feel that her right hand should have been further to the front of the wall and possibly with a little less bend in the elbow. Perhaps if she were sitting in the space or leaning side-on it might help.

I also feel that I want to crop the right side as there seems to be too much empty space in that area.

I do like the angle of her head and the balance of the left arm/hand taking the weight. "Perhaps, because of the lack of tonal values".

I think you need to persuade/bribe you daughter to give it another go! It is a nice setting for a photo but I feel it needs some thought and lots of photos and poses to get it right.

Regards
David

Thanks MK. I agree with most of your assessments. It was an candid shot believe or not. I was taking some pictures of a Bald Eagle near a construction site and her and her brother were playing around inside one of the unfinished homes. I turned around and took the picture with a 300 MM lens without a lot ot thought. I was hoping to make something of it but I am not happy with it either.

Thanks,
