View Full Version : Hood Hats?

I see procameragear sells hood hats.
What do you think of them? Can you use them instead of a lens cap (with or without a UV?) Do you think they offer good protection? Can you get any size, to actually fit, almost any hood (I will have 4 lenses soon, 70-200 2.8 IS, 85 1.8, 30 1.4, 10-20).

I ask, because this seems like a really cool idea to me. My friend who shoots a Nikon 200 f2, has no front element lens cap, so he puts a hood hat like thing ontop to cover it.

I use one instead of the cap when I'm using a single lens and on the move...
It is so much easier to take off when the hood is on..
For lens protection I use the cap...

Really? So you dump the cap when your on the rn, and only use the cap for storage?

yup..the lens hoods make it tuff to get the caps on and off...this way I don't have to keep taking the hoods off..
I call it my lens condom:oops:

I agree - on my 70-200 and 24-105, it's just so much easier to use the hood hats. In fact, I just bought a couple more for other lenses.
However, I do put the lens caps back on soon as I'm done shooting.

Cooool! What size did you get for 70-200 2.8 IS (if that is your lens, I didn't check your gear list), I don't know what the diameter of it is as I don't have it yet.

I think playing with lens cap with hood on is easy way to scratch lens also.

So, as the OP asked twice, how do you figure the correct size for your hoods?

Measure the diameter of the hood I think, but I would think it's best to ask someone what size they are using for whatever lens if they own the same lens.

Small for 85mm f/1.8
Large for 70-200 f/2.8
XX Large for 300mm f/2.8

...and I think they might be on par with the idea for sliced bread. I store my lens with hoods and hats on and caps off now. I think they're perfect for use at baseball games too where my glass gets some rough handling and sees more dirt and dust in a week than some folks glass sees in years.

If you look at the various Hood Hat pages at Pro Camera Gear, they give the hood diameters that each model will fit. Measure your lens hood diameter and compare to the posted Hood Hat fitting ranges.

I just purchased the XXL hood hat by Optech for my 300 f2.8. It is so much better and easier to use and easier to store than that monstrosity that Canon provides.

Hm, quite excited then. I'll get one hopefuly for each of my lenses then sometime in the future.

I got one soon after I got my EX 100-300. What a hood that has, lol. Now I have one for every lens. I bought mine from B&H.

So anyoen else use them instead of lens caps completely? With or without protection filter (Uv or whatever)?

I use the hood hat in place of the lens cap. It's convenient and offers enough protection for me.

I haven't used protective filters in years and as soon as I got hood hats I stopped using lens caps too. Sometimes I remove the hood and put a lens cap on when the lens goes into long term storage, but if the lens is in my bag or on my backup body the only protection it has is the hood and hat -- and I think that's all it needs.

That's pretty cool.
