Personally I found nothing that I think Canon or Nikon would venture into.
and certainly nothing that either of them are going to put into a consumer level body.
Don't be so quick to judge... I think it will happen... one day. Definitely not in the near future though.
I was actually toying with the idea after seeing what the ultrasound imaging machines can do... During an ultrasound for a pregnancy, the technician needs to capture stills that show certain things - lengths of bones, size of organs etc. Extremely difficult do get while the baby is jumping around if it just captured using stills. The solution is to take a stream of video, then "shuffle" through it to find a frame that clearly shows what they need.
Eventually I think this sort of thing will cause a blur between digital still and video cameras but functions like this are obviously way too advanced for current consumer equipment. Give it 20 years or so...

im not saying itll never happen. but it CERTAINLY wont be happening in the near future or on the "40D" body. in fact i dont see it being a consumer product inside of 20 years either, if ever, it just wouldnt be anything near neccisary for 99% of people's applications.

Depends when the 40D will be released ;) LOL
I don't see a consumer need for it, but I think it will get to a point where the enabling technology will be so cheap manufacturers will just include it because they can. Of course they'll let the marketing dept talk it up to generate a consumer need for it.
As far as the timing is concerned... well we've come a long way in the last 20 years...
