Hi All,

Searched here and google.

A while back there was a post that contained a list of lenses that were good for IR filter usage (i.e. no white central spot) and those that aren't. Anybody know where I can find it ?

The Canon 50mm f1.4 does have the white spot problem because I've tried it. Anybody know if the Canon 28-135 IS suffers the same ?

Cheers

Ian

what is this problem? i've been using 10D with 50mm f/1.8 II with limmited success. Filter was Hoya R72, ISO 3200 (H), f/4.0 - no white spots...

Some lenses have an anti-IR coating, the 50mm f1.4 does, the 50mm f1.8 does not. The white spot is a large area in the centre of the frame that is a lot lighter than the rest of the frame.

If I ever get an IR filter to fit a 72mm thread ( yikes on the price ) I'll let you know how the 28-135mm IS USM does. I used to do a bunch of IR photography with my G3, using a 52mm IR filter. I have a digital rebel now with the 18-55 it came with, and the 28-135 IS USM. I'd use a step-down ring for the IR i had for testing, but that was stolen with some of my other accessories a while back. I'd imagine with the full time manual focusing, and the IS enabled for shutter speeds around 1/8 to 1/30 might work, however with the 10D and some other digital EOS, I think because of the IR filtering, you are looking at shutter times in excess of 1 second, and IS wouldnt help much there, and you dont want to use IS when attached to a tripod, so i'm just wondering if the use of IS would be nulled in this situation.

The 28-135 IS lens is OK. It does not give a central hotspot when used with a Hoya R72 filter.

Leony, what do you mean by limited success?

In bright sun-light I was shooting with shutter speeds of around 1/20th - kind of slow for hand-held shots. I've had a lot more fun with my G2 (which I no longer have) - I could preview the image on the LCD while shooting - on 10D the viewfinder is too dark with R72 filter. I can barely see things in the view finder.

What I'm thinking about is switching from R72 filter to a red #25 filter - haven't tried that yet, but this might work.

DOn't want to buy the filter just to find out it doesn't...

well with an IS lens, 1/20 wont be too hard, i've done 1/15th handheld without problems.
