Ok so I see all these 1d classics for sale right now... at about the same price as a 30d.

I shoot sports for the local news paper and with my 350d, the autofocus is SLOWWWW. I also do alot of other types of photography and my 350d is great with pretty much everything else.

I want to either add a 30d or a 1d classic. Will I long for more resolution if I go with the 1d? Please help me decide! I really want the fast auto focus of a 1d series but I can't dish out the $$ at the moment for the 1dIIN :(

So my real question is... is it worth spending $800 on an old 1d or should I wait until I can afford a 1dIIn? (atleast a years wait!)

I doubt you'll need the extra resolution for a newspaper. You could always buy a 1D for now and sell again when you can afford a 1DIIn next year. I doubt the value will drop that much.

I would say go for the 1D classic.....for newspapers you really dont need the resolution and it would be ideal for field work as it can take quite a beating. Unless you find yourself heavily cropping allot of your photo's, the 1D sounds like a "slam dunk"!!

I own all three of those camera's and from my vantage point go for the 1D. As stated above, resolution for the papers is no problem. In fact I have no problem with 20x30 posters from my 1D. The whole megapixel thing is a bit overblown. The 1D only suffers in low light situations. There you must hit you exposure right on and you may need some noise reduction, but for the papers it should not be a problem. The focus speed, focus accuracy and FPS of the 1D blow the 30D out of the water.
If you decide on the 1D make sure it has the battery charger as they run $200-250 on the b&s boards. Also get a couple of extra batteries, the 1D does eat them up. Good luck and let us know which way you go.

For PJ work the 1D will be fine. Do you think you'll need more resolution? If so, why? If you can answer that question, then you can consider the 30D, but the 1D will still have the superior AF.

Ok thank you for the replies...

Now, I do alot of hockey photography and I consider that low light.. I use ISO 1600 on my 350D and the noise is not too bad. WIll the 1d be useable at iso 1600? Hockey is one sport that I love shooting so I will need a body that is decent at low light.. maybe the 1d ain't for me?

you have the 70-200L IS and itching to get mount on the MK2N, when you have this combo, watch out for the fast autofocus and fps...

Ya I may just keep my eye out for a used 1dmk2...

Perhaps alot of people will sell their mk2n when they upgrade to the mk3?

I went for the 1D classic (vs used 20/30D) and never looked back. Sure I'd like to have a bit more cropping room but the low resolution hasn't bothered me one bit. Nor has the "high ISO noise" which is chroma-noise which is actually not so bad.

However, I mainly do staged shoots so I always "crop" in viewfinder...

How much effect does the camers body have on autofocus speed?

Assuming you are using your "L" lenses on both.

Huge. 1D has the fastest autofocus system in any dSLR today I believe...

From what I have read the 1d series body has some insanely fast auto-focus. The body does matter big time for focus speed!
