Everything is working fine (power is on, autofocus works etc.) I think I have checked everything. Any ideas?

Try clearing all the settings under the #2 tab in the menu.

I've already tried clearing camera settings. fully charged battery, changed CF card, changed lens, checked all drive modes. the shutter button works when pressed halfway for auto focus.

I just got my Rebel on Friday and the day I got it I had that problem once. I turned it off and later it worked fine. I have no idea what happened. ???

Remove and reinstall lens.
Also, try the bulb setting.

Try using the Remote Capture software that came with the camera to release the shutter.
It could be that the release button is bad, and if the shutter will release with the Remote Capture then I'd call Canon Service.

Try putting the lens in manual focus, too. And turn on the custom function that lets you shoot without a CF card, then remove the CF card, then try again.

The 300D doesn't have custom functions :)
