Why would a professional want to use a free hosting service? It makes you look cheap and unprofessional IMHO.

I agree with Tim. In business, "looks" mean a lot!

Showing your pictures is what it's all about so whether you have a paid site or not is not important, especially if you're starting out. The more pictures you can show the better...some people have just their best shots on their website and end up looking like everyone else. When you can charge $3,000. per wedding then get an expensive website.

Another great site to host your pictures on is www.zenfolio.com (http://www.zenfolio.com)
You can try it for free for 14 days. After that runs out they send you an email to upgrade but let you try it another 14 days for free. Then for just $40.00 a YEAR you can post unlimited amount of pictures in a unlimited size format. You dont have to do any resizing or anything you just dump them down full size. They do have the option of selling your pictures though so be careful...

with zenfolio, you can simply uncheck the option that lets people order prints. I myself have that unchecked, and i also have my albums fro clients password protected.

Where are the professional looking images? I click on portfolio and it takes me to a blank page.
IMO if you don't want to go through the trouble to register your own domain and build your own website you'd be better off paying for a pro account at Smugmug if you are a pro or even a serious amateur.

Strange. I don't see a blank page but a selection of images.

Domain names and hosting are soo cheap these days I just dont see any good reason to use a free host where you dont have control over whats displayed on the pages that your directing potential clients to, particularly when its content relevant ads like google displays because its likely to be ads for other photographers. Theres so many other costs involved with starting a photography business the actual domain name and hosting is such a small part of what the actual business costs will be I think anyone who cant afford a few quid for them should maybe rethink their strategy.
Your domain name goes hand in hand with your reputation as far as I am concerned, you build your reputation up and people always know where to find you from the domain name that you use, you cant do that with any degree of security with freewebs because its all out of your control.

FREE just get a free Yahoo account and you can store all the photos you want, you can get slide shows also. Do not expect to get the full blow original size image. You can also download the photos for a larger image.

Still nothing ... which tells me that "free" doesn't always mean a deal.

Free is free. People often ask me if I have a website - now I have somewhere I can direct them. Friends and family from away can see some of my weddings...no big deal. You guys are a real friendly bunch here! I just thought I would share a free site I came across - no it's not as flash or fancy or (dare I say it) professional as yours - no my name is not blazened across the top - no I do not have "full" control of it...but hey - "I" can see my pictures and so can all of my family and friends who have checked it out.
Don't worry - I get the picture - I will certainly think twice before posting here again.
Happy shooting guys.

Jo, I wouldn't take it so hard. If you are just looking for a place to store images etc then what you are using is fine. If you want a professional looking site I would look elsewhere. The ad at the top is what bothers me the most. In business image is everything. Not sure about where you are located. Here in the states most ISP's allow you to a certain amount of webspace for free. without ad's etc. Just a thought. Keep posting ;)

Jo, it's a start. We all have to start somewhere. Well done on getting your name out there.
The suggestions are all from people who have already gone through the time and expense of setting one up - definately, in the long run, and you know it will be worthwhile. But as a quick starter, I don't see much wrong with it. :)
FYI, my website costs $30 a year for the domain name, and $170 for 2 years, hosted cheaply in USA. (and the design was $0, because I did it myself, again not perfect, but for the time being, does the job) - I've been told by some local NZ IT guys, should host it locally and pay 10 times the cost. But when you're just starting out, cost is everything. :)
Good luck
