I am getting ready to buy the canon 17-55mm 2.8 usm IS lens to use as my main lens, however, I have been reading a lot about the dust issues with this lens. Have any of you had problems with this lens? Any thoughts on the quality of this piece of equipment? Is there anything I can do to help stop the dust from getting in or get it out once it creeps in? Overall, is it worth the money for someone who is an aspiring wedding photog?

ok first off, let me point out that I don't have this lens. However I do know that it's not sealed in anyway. this being the case there's not a lot that you can do to stop dust from entering the camera. (apart from buying a p&s)
If you are worried about dust in your camera then get a rocket blower, change your lens with the body pointing down and make sure that your camera is turned off.
as for the use, I have hurd that's it a good lens, not a L series but quite close.

This has been discussed many times in the lens forum and you will get alot more feedback from there.
Mine definitely has dust in it. Does it bother me? Yes. Does it cause IQ problems? No. I usually use it wide open and no more than f/5.6, so the dust isn't a problem. Would I buy this lens again? YES YES YES! I'm not sure if there are any lens that is out there for the crop bodies that is better than the 17-55. It is an invaluable lens for the wedding photographer.
People have suggest putting a filter on the lens, but I don't think it helped. Dust happens, and I just live with it.

Best go read the lens forum, it's covered there. Dust, yes. Is it a problem, no.

I think the general consensus is: if you put a filter on the lens nice and tight (not over tight) as soon as you take it out of the box, then you'll be relatively dust free. If you don't use filters or don't put them on very loosely, then you can get dust.
I've had mine since april and no dust. I found my first piece of dust in there when I got my lens back from Canon for repair. :(

If you pixel peep your images to find problems, you are also prone to have dust too.
Shoot and have fun!

I have the lens, it's excellent, does it have dust? Don't know I've never looked, why would I want to, I bought it to take pictures. BTW there's also a chance that there's some dust behind my TV, it never stops me watching it though:oops:

Thanks to everyone for replying. I didn't even realize that there was a "lens" forum. I suppose I should explore the site a little more. I appreciate the info! I think I will go ahead with this lens.

It's a great lens, but it would be nice if the build quality were more like an L. Even so, I have really been enjoying the fact that it's lighter than my 24-70 and the IQ is fantastic. The only thing I notice is a lot of vignetting, which is popular these days anyway and easy to correct w/ ACR if needed.
