My new MP-E 65 arrived from B&H yesterday, here are a couple from my first kitchen countertop experiments. I think I'll be spending some time with inanimate objects getting to know the lens before I'm ready to start chasing bugs around my backyard.

whats the diff between this lens and the other macro lenses by canon? is there one or is this just a smaller, lighter version?

on the contrary it is quite heavy. the difference is that it cannot work as a normal lens as its minimum magnification is 1:1. It extends like extension tubes and goes up to 5:1 It is also only manual focusing.

number 2 is a lovely abstract.

canon's other macro lenses focus down to 1:1 life size, with AF, and therefore can also be used for normal shots. the MPE is MF only, and ONLY focuses from 1:1 to 5 times life size

Have fun with the new lens :)

No. 2 is salt on a DVD (one of the neat tricks I learned browsing here). I cropped it quite a bit to exclude a lot of OOF grains. Both shots were illuminated with a hand-held 380 EX speedlight (with Lumi-quest bounce) fired during a one second exposure. The magnification for both was around 2.5:1.

Zacker, I also considered the Canon 100mm 2.8 macro, which I understand is also a fine portrait and all-round 100mm lens, but I already have that range coveredby two normal lenses. I've dabbled with extension tubes and diopters before, and I decided to take the plunge on the MP-E 65 because I wanted the capability to push even closer than a 1:1 macro would allow. And the lens is fairly heavy at two pounds, I imagine that getting quality handheld shots is going to take some practice.

Thanks LordV, your reputation precedes you and I appreciate your comment!

Salt... i knew it.. did you know, no matter how small you crush it, salt will always stay in little squares? ( i learned that somewhere...lol) Nice shots, 2 Lbs? Thats one heavy lens!!! Yikes, i can barley get a sharp shot with the 100MM macro!!!

Your first shots, particularly #2, show that you will enjoy the remarkabl new world of higher macro magnification.:) I agree with Brian that #2 is special. Congrats on your new lens.

I really dig the second shot of the salt granules; it wouldn't be anything too special but for the fact that you've found a very colorful, visually pleasing surface on which to set them. Nice work.

Agreed with everyone else - shot 2 is a wall hanger. I love that abstract aspect. Well done.
