Being a noob, I was wondering about the pics seen here in this forum. Do a lot of you who post these impressive macro pics crop them before posting, or are they posted 'as is'? I've taken a few pics that would look nearly as good as some I've seen here, but only after cropping in a little closer to the subject. Just wondering, and trying to get the knack of macro photography...

most are true macro shots... its in the detail.. esp with bugs and such. But im sure there are a few non macro shots that are basically just extreme crops but, if they look good, they are good... so, I ask... Whats in a name?

unless using an MPE65 at 3x mag or more I will often be cropping images to give them more impact. This is nearly always the case with bugs of 5mm or smaller unless the enviroment is of particular interest.

I wasn't trying to criticize, just trying to found out the 'tricks of the trade', so to speak. I could care less if a pic has been cropped. A good pic is a good pic, regardless.

Most will say on the original post, or tell you if asked, if they were cropped or not...

serious crop, well the surrounding slate is hardly of much interest and doesnt even give a sense of scale:

Since I am usually on a tripod with a focusing rail and have a range of lens choices, I try to keep cropping to a minimum. Often I crop for minor artistic considerations, such as changing the aspect ratio from that of a 35mm tothat of an 8" x 10" , or eliminating ugly backround, etc. On rare occasion, my conception of the picture changed between taking and final edit; I realized that I did not get as close as I would have liked. Hopefully, there wil be enough detail in the crop.

It depends on the insect/arachnid and the shot and that photographer's style. I'm not a huge fan of cropping for a variety of reasons, so I usually shoot most stuff at 1:1 and leave it as is. Sometimes I'll crop if I think it adds to the image or it's quite small and I want to get more detail. Have a 4mp camera does hurt one in the cropping stakes.
