We are two short weeks away from the one year anniversary of the weekend photo challenges.. wow!! that feels strange. But, in honor of the occasion I think we should have a re-take challenge... the oppurtunity to get the photos from a theme that you may have missed or re-take ones that you maybe want a second chance at.. this could be fun I think...

Anyway, all the rules and timeframes are the same happy shooting.

Would it also be an interesting idea for people to also post their original shots (if they still haven them), so that we can see the differences?

Hey, (re)Pete, this is the perfect subject for you!

As I've missed many of these WWPD challenges, I'll have a look to see what I van do this week :D

Should be a fun weekend of shooting. Funny when I look at the list, what seems like last weekend was months ago.

This is a nice theme for the 50th and this is also the first weekend I have had chance to even think about some shooting for quite a while. So, I will pop out for half an hour and see what I can capture. I have a few then and now ideas ...

Was sick last night and not quite up to go out to photograph today so I thought I would go through my past contributions (not many actually :( ) and maybe find a shot I could re-process in a different way.

While I was browsing through all the 49 previous threads I noticed a couple things.

Part 12 with the theme red was the most active with 218 posts.
Part 43 with the theme weather was the least active with only 23 posts.
Also in part 16 I found in my opinion the most creative interpretation of a theme. See here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=1650614&postcount=6) if you agree.

I miss the commenting that was done a lot in the beginning. (I know I am guilty of not commenting a lot).

Anyway for my shots this weekend. While browsing through the threads I found one shot that I could use in a loose interpretation of re-take. The composition is almost the same but taken at different time (day/night) and with different equipment.

So the first shot of the Copenhagen Operahouse is from part 17 Beauty & Beast.

I don't remember if this was shot with my 20D or 1D mk IIN.

Second shot is much stronger IMO. Very nice. The PP is also nice and smooth, while in the the first shot it looks harsh, possibly the light or just over sharpened.

I agree and thats also why I choose these particular photos to illustrate a difference.

Love your second shot, the water is so smooth as opposed to the first shot. Beautifully pp'd. I like the way the opera house is lit-up.

Also dePaul link made me grin. Love his sense of humor

Nice illustration, Tommy, the Opera house reminds me of the fan tail of a large cruise ship. Does look nice at night.

I'm working on it, I promise! ;) Apparently I took nearly 1700 shots while on vacation, and I'm still rating and keywording everything so I can find what I want to post.

We had a theatre shoot Saturday in a venue I had shot 1-1/2 years ago with my 300D, was not happy with the shots of the theatre at all. So I took advantage of the situation during a break in the action, and these fit into the WWPD #18 Darkness. This theatre went through total renovation several years back, it is quite ornate:

First is the facade along the upper balcony:

There are one of these dragon facades on each side of the procenium:

I see I cut off it's face.:(

Excellent shots here.. Especially love Tommy's one, which is totally the feel of this weekends theme. I should have taken the opportunity to Re-Pete some past ones, but ended up being too busy with house-bound work this weekend.

Yes, nice shots here. What a great theatre to be in, Becky. Just being there would make me enjoy the show. And Tommy, your 2nd shot's really nice. I liked your 1st one, but it pales beside the 2nd one.

I'll be posting later today. See ya then.

I took three shots yesterday but not had time to PP them or to find the original images they are supposed to be retakes of ... and the three may turn out junk anyway, so don't hold ya breath :D

My "Re-Take" is for the "Churches" challenge. I guess it isn't technically a re-take, since I wasn't trying to improve a shot. Instead, I was experimenting with two techniques: (1) using fill flash and (2) metering from the sky to get a correct exposure of a snowy landscape on a sunny day. To make my experiment fit the "Re-Take" theme, I returned to the church I shot for the "Churches" challenge.

My experiment was a disaster. It's a junk shot (to use Condyk's term), but I'm posting it anyway because it taught me a good lesson -- pay attention to details. What details? Well, I thought that for the fill flash I had set the unit to -1. Turns out that I had actually set it to +1. And for metering the sky, I inadvertantly had the camera set to a +2/3 EC. And, of course, I was too cold to worry much with composition. So it all added up to disaster. But I still had fun!

Here's my mess straight out of the camera; no PP at all. To me, the fill flash is too strong on the headstones, and the snow is overexposed.

I'm doing a re-shoot of last weeks focal length challenge.. I'll get them posted later this evening.. It was also my goodbye to my 28-105 which will more than likely be in the post office by next week. I LOVE tommy's shots. very very cool.

Ok, so all these weren't taken from Friday through Sunday -- but at least the first one was. I was nearly 3000 miles away from home during part of the shooting period, so I wasn't going to be able to revisit any particular shot I'd taken to try to improve it. Instead, I chose to revisit particular themes that I'd wanted to participate in, but hadn't been able to for one reason or another.

The themes I chose to revisit were "Travel" and "Candids." My first shot fits into both categories. This is Paul, a grandfather and the definition of the Aloha spirit. He is a resident at the condo complex we rented a unit at while vacationing on Maui. For his health, he snorkels in the surf out front (he says it's good for his blood pressure) and spearfishes for octopus. When he catches one, he offers it to a large Moray Eel that lives feet from the beach. With Paul's assistance, my kids were able to feed a large (4+ foot long) eel no more than three feet from where they were standing - an absolutely unbelieveable experience. This shot was taken while he was talking with my father about being a grandparent, and the importance of enjoying every moment of it.

My next two shots (I know :D ) were taken on Wednesday (I know, I know ) while on a whale watch tour off Lahaina. We happened upon a mother with her calf, and were fortunate enough to catch them playing together. The ship's captain very excitedly said this was the first time he'd seen a mother and calf breeching together this season (the season typically runs November through April), and the only time he'd ever seen it this close to the boat, and this close to Lahaina. The breech took us all by surprise, so my framing of the series was a bit off, and they were so close, I found myself zoomed out a bit too far in some of the other shots.

http://dbberg2.googlepages.com/DBB_070221_0704-Edit.jpg

Near the end of the cruise, the mother and calf started to head away from shore. As they moved away, the calf pause to "spy hop" (a behavior the whales use to peek above the surface of the water to see what's there) while the mother started a deep dive. It seemed the perfect aloha -- a hello and a goodbye -- and truly an experience that could only be had on Maui:

Thanks to everyone who made it to the end of my post. ;)

Tommy - love the second shot. What a great view.

Becky - love the dragon. I'd shoot it over and over.

Okay all. I found a small break during the dang blizzard i've been living in for the last week... and decided to take a shot from last weeks theme of 28mm... So, brought out my soon to be gone 28-105 for a last hurrah... here's one of the shots.. Unfortunately I wrecked the ISO and took about a GIG of unsaveables before I realized... I am soo sick of snow and exposures.. It's not even a challenge anymore.. it's just obnoxious..

Becky: Lately I have found I like these kind of low light photos more and more. Bummer with that speaker blocking the dragon in the second one. Usually I prefer simple frames but I think your frames work well with these photos.

Barbara: I think we all miss details from time to time. Hopefully we learn from it. I really should experiment with fill flash too.

David: This is a nice portrait. Good seperation from the background. Seeing those whales must have been awesome. The closest I have been to whales is in Seaworld which of course isn't the same.

Sari: I like this in black and white. Is it your your car thats burried in the snow.

So whats up for next weekend ?

I took 3-4 shots a while back I think for the 'shopping' theme, but can't remember now. Anyway, at that time we had a thriving corner shop run by a Sikh guy and his family. Friendly and sold all you need pretty much. So, the first shot I never used but was from that short series and shows a customer walking in.

Now, more recently, the whole building that the shop is just a small part of has been bought up by Tesco's, which is the UK's largest food retailer and, probably, amongst the the largest in turnover. Besides blocking off the pavement while they convert the building into a Tesco Metro store, and pretty well hiding the guys shop, the little retailer is being forced to quit as his lease runs out soon and they won't renew it.

Yes, it's 'just business'', 'free market' and all that BS but we don't need a big Tesco Metro store IMO. We have several small stores and cafes locally and I can pretty well guarantee they will all close through competition over the next year or so. Sad for a community to lose these small places!

Here's another suggestion, just to get some discussion going -- Fences. I picked it randomly from the list of unused topics in the sticky.

wow! I fell asleep yesterday instead of spending sometime on this thread. I like the fences idea.. we did abstract not soo long ago. and I like fences.. taken quite a few shots featuring them..

Sounds likely to me, and it'll be an interesting area for people as well - not being something people normally shoot.

I was actually thinking about "music", since i'm listening to my iPod at the moment, but I'd be happy to go with "abstract"...
