I would like to develop a seemless workflow to operate against CRW images in order to:
1) review and delete the low quality images in a review directory
2) batch rename using any/all EXIF fields, especially date/time/speed/aperature/focal length
3) store in some sort of database which allows tagging and later tag selection.
I own ACDSee 6 and Photoshop CS and am toying with an evaluation copy of Thumbsplus but no combination of them is ideal.
Any ideas to help here would be very welcomed.

Most of the EXIF info is in the THM files. (Just in case you were running these directly against the CRW)

Yes, I know am seeing that.
But ACDSee's CRW plug-in goes at least part way by reporting on the date/time and aperature but not much else. So I think they can do it with a bit of clever code.

I think iMatch (www.photools.com) would do all this for you. In addition to excellent EXIF and IPTC editors it has powerfull and flexible categorization functions - all managed via built-in database. It's built-in renaming functions are very good and all these areas can be extended due to it's scripting engine.
Also, it has special support for Canon RAW files and treats the CRW and THM files as a pair when moving/copying/editing etc.

I have been a user of ThumbsPlus for several years now.
TP is about to release a service pack for version 6, along with a digital camera plugin (both are available as advanced beta releases today).
(1) in your list is easy. One nice (and new) thing is that TP will keep the CRW and THM files together. If I copy or delete the image, the THM goes along with the CRW.
(2) While TP has an extensive batch capability, I didn't see any hooks that allow renaming a file based on EXIF parameters.. . TP does have an API that one can somehow write programs for, but that may be heavy lifting for what you want.
(3) TP does this very well; the Database can be opened with Microsoft Access, along with the extensive internal capabilities TP has for tagging and related operations.
Is 70% a passing grade? :?
Good luck!
