Well, I didn't "almost die" because I didn't slip, but I took the risk I guess,

I don't do heights, and it's a great set of shots :)

I thought it was two females squabbling. I was wondering how many chicks fall off those ledges? I read about some sort of cliff-dweller bird, where the first born will push the other egg out of the nest so that there is more room for him. Now THAT'S sibling rivalry!

This was taken by my friend. He wouldn't walk out to where I was. I just walked out there like I was walking on a sidewalk because I wanted the shot so bad. After I took the picture I realized how scary my vntage point was and it took me 10 minutes to walk back along a ridge that took me 10 seconds to get to.

Larger version of tornado that's in my avatar. I took this shot in KS and the tornado was about 1 mile away. Didn't almost die but it was not like a walk in the park.
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/4687/tornadonearmedicinelodgno7.jpg
Hail that fell just minutes after the tornado passed. It was falling very sporadically when I took the shot. If I would have gotten hit with one it would have been all over for me. The hail was between baseball and softball size.

Stormchaser, great pic! I've been so interested in tornadoes my whole life, and I would "die" to get a picture of one, much less see one in real life. However, you're right about the hail...holy cow! One of those to the head and it's good night!

Yep, just about as appropiate as could be, though I didn't want to mention it. Thanks for pointing it out. Truly though, that is Golden Canyon in DVNP. It is mentioned in the Radiant Vista Podcast. We did not have an ideal shooting day but I loved being there more than any other place I had been and was about to be. It is a true shocker. AMAZING!!!!!

I have some similar shots from when I visited DV about 10 years ago. Truly amazing place. Luckily I was there on one of the cooler days as it was only 112 F. I remember getting out early the next morning at 6am to get some shots and it was already about 80 degrees F. Loved the drive into the valley through Stovepipe Wells and then out again to Las Vegas. Must go back again one day (my wife wants to go back to Yosemite - her favourite place)

Well, in the interest of keeping this thread going...
Here's one from a backpacking trip I took in Yosemite last summer. My group climbed up the back side of Half Dome and this is some of the results.
No danger hear, just my favorite shot of my group on the top.

Then there was this...that's me...
http://photoedj.smugmug.com/photos/130430136-M.jpg
I had a friend in my group take these after I set the camera...
http://photoedj.smugmug.com/photos/130429691-M.jpg
This is the real reason I was out there...wanted to show my friends and family the not so easy climb.
http://photoedj.smugmug.com/photos/130429106-M.jpg
I first showed these to my wife during our groups get together with all our families a week after the trip. I still have a bruise where she and another friends wife hit me!

Well, the risk was there. This is Cedar Creek Falls in San Diego County. Some parts of the hike are very steep and high which added to the risk. It's about a 2.5 to 3 mile hike to this location, and as out of shape as I am in, at times I felt that I could die on the hike out.

Although not a very good photo, this is the view from the bottom that kinda shows the size of the falls.

The second and third shot are dramatic examples of what scale can do for a shot. I was shocked when I saw your friend in the picture. I thought it was SO much smaller from the black and white shot.

This was on the median in Time Square (cars zooming around us). Although it looks like no one is around, cabs were circling the block watching us the whole time we were shooting.
I got the idea that shooting up would look really cool. So, I laid down on my side and my head was off the curb. My wife was shooting with us, freaked out, and was standing in the lane. I think I actually saw cabbies swereving at me...and this wasnt even the best shot from this shoot.

Yeah, it was sad cos it couldn't sink its fangs into me. Kind of reminds me of some of the women that I've known in the past ;)
Glad you had a laugh, I just couldn't resist taking the micky out of this thread (it's Aussie humour).
I remember a few years ago when bushwalking with a mate we did actually come across a brown snake (rather deadly). It had been sunning itself and we'd passed with about six feet or so of it. It didn't really like that and we had to run, and I mean run to get away from it (boy can they move fast). We got on top of a hill to get away from it, I took a picture from a distance but I have no idea where the image would be these days, my film/print/slide organisation is shocking. So, that's my real near death experience.

Ok, so my I wasn't in as life threatening of a position as my subject, but we both were precariously perched.
In addition to the 17 stories from the ground, he is about 25-30ft above roof level at the top of the stack... It was a little windy for me with a camera in one hand and a ladder rung in the other... It must have been much worse for him.

See the booty on the far left? Just after snapping this, it bumped me causing me to slip. Luckily I caught the cable under my arm and was able to recover my footing.
Been there a couple times! It wouldn't be so dangerous if there weren't so many people climbing that didn't know what they were doing. The turn around rate going up those cables is probably over 50% which makes traffic terrible!!! Great hike though, huh?

Well, the risk was there. This is Cedar Creek Falls in San Diego County. Some parts of the hike are very steep and high which added to the risk. It's about a 2.5 to 3 mile hike to this location, and as out of shape as I am in, at times I felt that I could die on the hike out.

I think that I might win this one (or come very close). Here is the story:
Went to Yosemite in February 2007 with a bunch of friends. Our first stop was half-dome rock. It was raining outside and the moss on the rock was beautiful. Myself and two others decided to go and shoot some pictures. We walked about 30-40 feet onto the rock when I saw this beautiful scene:
http://jhzafrani.smugmug.com/photos/131057103-S.jpg
After taking the shot, I stood up and did not notice the moss underneath my shoes (hiking and climbing shoes). Well, to put it simply, I slid, fell backwards, and started sliding down half dome rock. To those of you who were there, you know that there is almost nothing to stop you. Add my 260 pounds, slippery rock, and a neoprene jacket (which can get to be very slippery when wet) and you have a speeding bullet down a slippery half dome rock. For those of you who have never been there, it ends in a cliff that falls about 3000 feet down.
After sliding for a bit, I was able to stop myself, but I was very close to the edge. My savior was a branch that I was able to grab a hold of.
I know what you are saying: bulls@@t! well, I have the proof:
http://jhzafrani.smugmug.com/photos/151468477-S.jpg
The picture above was generated from the GPS logs that my trusty Sony GPS tracker was taking as I was sliding down.
Needless to say, I am no longer walking on that rock ever again!

Every point (peak) in the second picture represents a GPS reading. The lines in between represent the path. Note how the peaks on the right are actually over the edge...

So, let me get this straight. You are saying, based on the data from your GPS and the second image, you actually went over the edge 6+ times.
Right, got it.:p

I know it is hard to believe. I got very close to the edge and almost over the edge. GPS data can have a buffer of 6 feet. Each peak is a reading that is automatically done at 6-10 second intervals.
I can definitely say that it was scary. I got back up to the car, called my wife, and told her that she was almost several millions richer and got yelled at like I never have in my life.

Do doubt, there is pretty much nothing to stop you from going all the way to the valley floor if you take a spill from up there. Been to the top a couple times, and even being an experienced hiker and climber, I still get a little nervous up there! Glad you are okay though, cheers

Great shotI'll second that. The road's narrower than you think it should be, and there's always lots of traffic, and anybody who wants to set up a tripod there must be certifiable. It's funny, there is definitely a difference between American drivers and English drivers. The Americans will honk and curse and go around, whereas the English would probably take a good look at you and decide to teach you a lesson! In the Selinda in northern Botswana we found 3 lionesses gorging on a young giraffe in heavy bush. We were in an open Landrover with no doors so I positioned myself lying on the floor with a jacket over my body in order to be at eye level, and the driver reversed into position. Normally lions don't really react to vehicles but this one didn't like something about me (perhaps my giant lens sticking out the door) and seriously growled whilst looking me straight in the eye. It felt like she looked straight into my soul and found me wanting. As she was only about 10m away she could have got to me in a blink of an eye. Luckily she decided not to move and went back to her meal. I got off a couple of shots before getting the hell out. I can still remember the feeling...

My first rookie lesson on the subject of 'Think first, engage camera second"
This is from my first day out using with my new Rebel XT. Set in idiot mode (full auto), with the little lens that came with the body.
The idea was... the elephants come out of the compound, and make a left turn... was setting up for a nice profile shot.
However the one in the front, spotted me and was heading for me at a fast pace.
This shot was taken while I was running backwards, heading for a tree.

I am the subject matter of this shot, not the taker. My buddy and I had walked out onto this outcropping off the trail and taken a few shots, and I decided to get my bike and continue down the trail so he could get a shot of exactly how big the rock face was. The trail was a good 20 feet off of the edge, but I felt like walking to within 2 feet of the edge to pose with my bike. I wasn't aware that the rock below me was washed away underneath. I don't know what the chances of it collapsing were, and I don't wanna know. Picture links to the larger size.

Well, I didn't almost die taking these. It was thrilling and a bit life-threatening though...I guess.

Actually it wasn't loaded, so I guess it wasn't really dangerous. This was a shot for some band photos, taken in a South Philly gun store.
if you hadn't told us the details to the picture, i'd think it was some drunk dude pointing a gun at you.

Alot of the riots/demonstrations are about american bases in korea. But there also demonstrations about government, the war in iraq, etc. But mostly younger people complaining about american bases, because they werent around when the korean war was fought, so they dont know what america really did for their country

Well - I didn't almost die, but it was kinda scary. From the Empire State Building Observatory looking south over the Village and Financial District. Chilly & windy - had a hard time stabilizing . I was using my "Mr. Big" 70-200 L lens - boy was it giving me the willies trying to focus! I don't do well with heights.

Well, this was taken after being nearly run over by the same train after making the absolutely unquestionably BAD decision of walking on the tracks on a strech I couldn't get off...
Don't lecture me, I had gone without sleep for 40 hours...

Had it been on the other track, it would hve been traveling about 20MPH faster and I wouldn't have had a chance to get off.
