Ok so now that we have the 1D MKIII released by Canon how long do you think it will be this time before they release an upgrade or have they got it spot on first time?
What do you think if anything is missing from the MKIII or did you expect to be a feature that is not present in the new model.

I would have liked FF, but that's about it...
Don't know if the new UI is an improvement, but I guess there's really no telling till I've held one ;)

N would be years off. I mean lets be honest, ISO and LCD improvements were all the N are.
3" LCD will be dominating the consumer market for a long time. Canon have just gone ISO6400 where other companies are struggling with 3200 and those that can are rubbish at 1600.
There would have to be a major fault for this to become a N
The 1Ds Mark II never went N in its 3 years but maybe this was due to the sheer cost of the II anyway.
Making live peview auto focus could be something to be engineered.

Yeah the N should have total brew making capabilities. Also it should be able to iron. Nothing is worse than looking down at the screen and noticing a wrinkle.:p
But seriously it will be a while before the 3n makes itself known. But just imagine what it might be.

Wow...I'm suprised someone started this type of thread already...the III isn't even on shelves yet!
I agree with it needing brewing capabilities. Come on Canon! Get it together!

I really really really hope they introduce a firmware update to allow an M-Raw setting.. the S-Raw is a little small for my liking.. and I think they could easily add an M-Raw via firmware.

I think an N version has a lot to offer - it'd include all the mkIII improvements and add full frame, huge resolution (22mp is the figure usually bounced around here), stupidly huge buffer...
Plus the N version is due an upgrade in the menu department, plus having all the new custom functions the mk3 has added to it...
The mkiii isnt high enough resolution for a lot of applications the N is used for, so there's still a need for a mk3 N...

Dumb question the "N" means what?

Maybe a faster FPS. Something like 35 - 40 FPS would be nice....

realistically the 1D MKIII or N has no need to be FF, its a pro sports /journalist body, where togs like the x1.3 crop. Thats where the 1Ds comes in being FF body which is desired by primarily studio togs.
Not much more to do to the camera, but with new technology emerging daily, something new will be on the drawing board i suspect. Not too soon I hope

Of course.
All DOF button does is engage the aperture on the lens to close to the set F number.

Actually there was no change in ISO. Only LCD and some functionality tweaks.
IQ is exactly the same (I've owned both).
And to be honest, I prefered the smaller LCD on the original, as it had better contrast, and more accurate colour.

IQ is different, there were changes made for better in cam JPEGS. you also get dual writing capabilities (reason enough for me to "upgrade") Among other features.

IQ is the same, but yes, jpg processing was different.
Raw is identical.

the MK3N has the swivel screen without which a live lcd is not so much use.

I think we make a mistake when we look at camera development in the past as a guide to the future, especially on timings. For instance if we look at 1d to 1d mkII to mkIII the time between models is lengthening as the technology covers most of our requirements pretty well. The same is true for 1ds to mkII and how many runoursa have we seen in the last 12months about the mkIII and now Autumn looks the earliest for it's intro. I think we will not see any upgrade of the 1d mkIII for 3-4 years MINIMUM. Why would they? What massive feature or benefit are we missing. If you want FF then 5d or ds is the answer. Soon new digital SLR cameras will be introduced as frequently as 35mm SLR's were a few years ago.

Methinks it needs to be the world's first phone-camera, as many camera-phones as we have nowadays...

Absolutely! I couldn't agree more. Some are already berating the live preview, but let them not use it. I've had live screen, swivel, previously, and when needed, it is a great feature. They WILL come eventually, even on the 1-Series. People are saying they couldn't make them strong enough, blah, blah, they can. I predict that eventually they will not only be swivel screens, but removable, wireless!
I just thought of that. Be able to take the LCD off the camera, hold in-hand like a Palm Pilot, and snap away!
This would work! Maybe I should write Canon!? Have some controls on the LCD also for AF, zoom, etc. How handy would that be.
For the "I hate live preview crowd" no worries, you can always buy a sued M2 for as long as you wish. ;)

With te exception of the MkIIn, which was only a tiny incremental upgrade, the 1D models have had three years between them.

Oh yes coz that wont shorten the life of the sensor. Movie mode is a joke. There are good still cameras. and there are good motion capture cameras.. Thats the way its always going to be.

It can take movies, infact about 3x the resolution of HD video, but at 10fps

If you want 12MP images at 60FPS RAW with movie mode, just buy THIS (http://red.com/)
It kind of makes the MKiii look like a toy.

Yeah, no kidding! I think I will buy that and go take some HD videos of planes taking off at the international airport!
I don't think Canon can rightly call the MKIII the fastest DSLR anymore.

I dont want a movie mode - I never use it on my P&S but how many wanted a live lCD - I wouldnt bet heavily against it, there could be a use for sports journalists.

I guess you are right, technically it's not a SLR as afaik.
But it behaves pretty much the same as you can use SLR lenses.
