The revised edition is more up to date with regards to film and digital cameras. It doesn't cost that much IMHO and is well worth the price. Get Learning to see Creatively as well.

I purchased the first edition and went to the library to check out the revised edition. Not that my opinion counts for much, but I highly recommend this book. The basic principles in the two books are the same, but the revised edition has several learning exercises that are a great way to put what you have just read into practice. The revised edition also discusses some of the newer technology. This can help you grasp the concepts a bit sooner because you may not know where the aperture ring is on your nifty new DSLR.

True, I didn't mean to imply they were extinct, just not as common as they used to be when the first edition of Understanding Exposure was published.

I've read both, and I'd recommend the revised edition as well.
