I came across this piece of info attributed to Canon Japan. In case it is of interest to others:
From a Reuters report dated 3/15/04:
"In what could be another headache for Nikon, Canon's Ando said a lower-priced digital SLR could be about one year away."
"'If it's not this autumn, then that would probably mean next spring,' Ando said, noting the release would then be one-and-a-half years after the original 'EOS Kiss.' 'Development times are so much faster than they were in the film age.'"

I think that this actually alluded to a DSLR below the price of the 300D but in addition to it (or its replacement).

The comments by the Canon official are not very clear on that point, and I was making a bit of speculation in calling it "dRebel Mk II." (I was mostly trying to be concise for the topic subject line.)
But note that he sets the "target price" for the new model to be "under 100,000 yen" (vs. 120,000 yen for the current dRebel). I would suggest that it is rather unlikely -- though not impossible -- that Canon would want to add another model so close to the current price point of dRebel/Digital Kiss/300D.
Also he commented on the short development time since the introduction of the current dRebel model.

This 'news' is hardly worth saying anything about.
sounds like a learner reporter trying to impress the boss by interviewing the janitor at canon
nothing that we allready don't know

Ando... that'd be Ted Ando would it? Vice president and general manager of Canon's Camera Division?... hardly a "janitor"... :P

I lay strong odds that the replacement to the 300D will in fact be about $200.00 less expensive.. it stands to reason.
Thanks for the report Primo.. interesting news indeed.

Yes, and then whenever the current Drebel is replaced, it will go a little upmarket. Perfectly logical marketing strategy - but speculation nonetheless.

Just to be clear here, the speculation part is regarding the name of the new lower-priced dSLR and if it will be a replacement to dRebel or an additional model.
The statements by the top-level Canon official seem pretty clear as far as their plan for this lower-priced dSLR (okay, call it xxxD, then) and the very general time-frame of its introduction.
Would it be a surprise? Given the pace of technological advance and the fierce competition, I would say hardly.
I also doubt that Canon would make any clear statements now as to exactly when dRebel will be replaced. (It can hurt the sales of the current model.) It's up to you to connect the dots.
For what it's worth. (Probably not much. But then, that would apply to most of my posts.)
