View Full Version : Is the price diff. worth it? 20d vs. 30d

I'm nearly there in terms of buying my first slr. Been lusting (and obsessing) over the 30d and have pretty much decided to go with a refurb. or used unit. That way I can have extra $$ for a nice lens and some accessories. Plus I hate hasseling with rebates. And the minute I walk out the door the value drops at least 10-20% - like a new car. While shopping I have noticed a lot more used 20d's available for quite a bit less than a used 30d. I've seen 20d's for as low as $500-$600. Pretty tempting as the lowest price on a 30d I've seen is $999.
So here's my dilemma. What is the 30d giving me over the 20d besides a larger lcd and spot metering? And as a beginner do I even need spot metering? This camera will primarily be used to "learn with" until I can afford a more advanced future model like the mythical 40d. I'm thinking that the extra bucks on a 30d would be better spent on glass.
Brainstorm with me here. What do you think?

If you know you're going to be upgrading bodies in a few years, I'd definitely go with the 20D and spend the money you saved on good glass. The 30D offered a larger LCD, spot metering and Picture Styles for JPGs, none of which, in my opinion, are needed for a beginner.

I have the 30D but a 20D would do me fine. It depends on the features you need (rather than want!) I would go 20D with a better lens personally, tho' the 30D is a truly wonderful camera body at a fair price these days.

For your given uses, you are better of saving a few hundred with a 20D.

Until and unless you plan on getting a light meter, the 30D has a critical upgrade over the 20D for learning exposure, the RGB histogram. The luminance histogram can indicate safe exposure even though one color has highlights so blown that detail is damaged. The RGB histogram is much better at protecting detail. That alone is worth the price for me.
I'd say, 30D.

I have two 20D s and would not trade. I also know a fellow who got the 30D and traded it back for a 20D. Just a matter of personal pref, but I would get the 20D and save up for some good glass.

I Have a 30D but have used the 20D and really unless you're looking at the little "30D" or "20D" label on the body of the camera it's pretty much impossible to tellt he difference. I love my 30D But I'm sure I'd be happy with a 20D

I just went through this same dilema and decided to go with a reburbished 20d. Received it yesterday from Adorama Camera for $650.00. I'm happy with my decision. :D :D :D

The 20D is fine for me. The 30's bigger LCD is the only feature I would like to have. Save the $ like some others here have suggested and get a GOOD lens.
You'll be happier down the road I bet.....

Thanks for all the feedback. Looks like the 20D with a Sigma 17-70mm is about right in terms of budget, flexibility and as a learning platform.
Any other feedback is appreciated.

OK, I have a 30D on its way. Can you explain to me how to use this other histo, or is it the only one it has?
