I've used the Canon XL1 (not the XL2 but very similar) and the Sony PD150 and PD170... of the two brands I like the Sony's better.

Hey there,

Just wondering why you picked the Canon, (sorry, I know this is a canon forum), I have canon photography gear but I have to admit I didn't choose canons for the video gear.
I've been doing video for 15 years now.

There's certainly a lot of info on the web for reviews and comparisons for video equipment. What is it you are wanting to use it for, weddings?

If you haven't read reviews and comparisons yet you might want to take a peek at them before you buy your camera, so that you pick the one that is right for you.

:) Happy filming!

Sony here too - VX2100 which is effectively a PD150/170 without the better sound facilities and can only record to miniDV.

I can't recommend canon as good video tools. Having never used sony, I prefer panasonic over canon.

My school currently uses some mini DV Sony's. I don't really like them as much as the high school's Canon XL2's. Gives you much more support as its on your back and more functions to work with. Alot of Audio functions to mess with :).

Why buy an almost obsolete SD format?
I would only consider HDV at this point.
Canon has their XH-A1 HDV camera.

I personally have 2 of Sony's HDV Z1U cameras which are also pretty decent.
