View Full Version : Right handed, left eyed!!!

Ok this might be a bit of an odd one, but i am right handed but always put the viewfinder to my left eye........ i cannot for some reason 'make' my right eye see through the viewfinder, if i place the viewfinder to my right eye i don't see anything! i can't seem to control the muscles in that eye to 'look' through the VF!
Anyway, this odd little infliction causes several problems.... Such as, when i have the camera pressed to my left eye it is very difficult to press the AV+/- button to adjust the aperture when i'm in manual mode on my 350d without me having to take the camera away from my eye - also the fact that the camera designed to be put to your right eye means that when pressed to my left eye my nose is in the way! this occasionaly accidently changes settings! i'm always accidently switching the timer on and missing shots as a result  and finally the last problem it causes me is in bright light i sometimes find it very difficult to see the VF info bar due to the bright light beaming in through the gap left from it not fitting snug to me eye........
Anyway, just curious if anybody else has the same problem or if anyone can suggest anyway to overcome this!! i'm sure it is hampering my progress in photography....
Anyway, just out of curiosity i have added a poll to see which eye people use......

I am right handed and I use my right eye ('cause my left eye's eyesight is worse), but I occasionally use my left eye to look throught the viewfinder, just to train the muscles that are not usually used. I have no problems with pushing any buttons using either eye... I use the * button to autofocus usually, no problem with the left eye either.

Same here - my distance vision has always been better in the left eye than right.
I haven't used a 350D so maybe that's the difference, but I have no problems with my 5D. The worst thing that happens is I sometimes get nose prints on the LCD  . But seriously, it's something I adjusted to years ago and don't even think about now.
Shoot enough pictures and you'll adjust.

I'm right handed and look through the view finder with my left eye because I have better vision in my left eye. It's a bit awkward but creates no problems that I can't deal with.

Thats actually a common problem, not only when using cameras.
Alot of people who are right handed often have a left handed approach to some aspects of life and vise versa, ie: someone who is uses their right hand to write with, often play cricket (baseball for you yanks!) or shoot a rifle or do something else left handed. Strange hey? Personally, I'm right handed, but play alot of sports left handed. Although I use my right eye to look through the view finder on my camera
There is a statisticts web site I came across ages ago that had some numbers on this. I can't remember exaclty what the figure was, if I find the web site I'll post it.

Well i cant see your poll but i am left handed and left eyed. The only time it causes me a problem is when i am shooting mx at the side of the track and am using the vertical grip as i like to keep both eyes open incase someone or something gets a bit to close and all i can see is the back of the bloody camera, there could be a double decker bus running at me from the side and i wouldn't even know.
Did read something somewhere about being left or right eyed to do with shooting a pistol but dont hold me to it.
Look at something about 4 or 5 meters away with your finger or thumb inline with the object at arms length and line it up so it looks as if it is directly over and in line with the object. Now without moving your arm shut first your left eye and then your right eye and you should notice that either your left eye or right eye at one point will leave your finger or thumb covering the object but when you try it with the other eye it will move out of line with the object.
Which ever one stays in line is your strongest eye

Well that would be great.... if i could only close just my left eye without scrunching up the whole of the left side of my face to do it! and when i succeed at that my right eye is barely open..... lol

Another right-handed, left-eye dominant fella here. Been that way my whole life. It surprised me that someone mentioned earlier in this thread being upbraided by a photography teacher for using the "wrong" eye. Might as well force someone who's left-handed to write with his right. An adult who is starting out in photography already instinctively knows which eye is dominant because, unless there's been some type of vision loss, that dominance will have been there a long time. And that person likely will find out pretty much right away, after very little camera use, which eye he or she is most comfortable with at the viewfinder. There's really no need for that type of criticism from a teacher. When I teach, there are far more important things I want to convey than that.
Of course, my greasy nose prints on the LCD DO get a bit irritating from time to time.

It all depends on the situation. Instinctively, I'll bring the camera to my left eye, but keep both eyes open. If the action is to my right, the left eye is in the VF. If the action is to my left, the right eye will be in the VF. I'm right handed BTW

I am absolutely astounded by the poll results. I'd never have guessed that so many people shoot like that. You can't even see past the body!
The simple fact is that you can train yourself to shoot either way. Even if I was left-eye dominant, I'd learn to use the hardware as it was designed. As it is, it took some work to get myself to keep my other eye open while I shoot. I'm getting it, though.
Wow.

I shoot with my right eye. I don't really have a reason, thats just what I do. I have taken the eye dominance test several times and both eyes are about the same. Sometimes my left is better and sometimes my right but it's the right eye that parks in the viewfinder.

I'm a righty (writing) and I'm also right-eye dominant. I wish I had known that growing up - I'd have taken up baseball, golf, etc. from the left side (because it helps to have your dominant eye closer to the pitcher, your front foot in golf, etc.).
Anyway, being right-eye dominant, I shoot with my right eye.
I think the better question might be "do you shoot with your dominant or non-dominant eye"?
(Quick test is to make a circle with your hand. Hold at arm's length, look through the circle at a distant object, and bring the circle to your face, keeping the item in the circle. Whichever eye you go towards is your dominant eye.)

I too am just stunned by the results of this poll. It never even occurred to me that so many people would shoot left eyed. It shocks me for one major reason: I was in the Army for 5 years, and I can count on one hand how many soldiers I had that shot with their left eye. It simply amazes me that so many camera shooters would do that. I guess it shouldn't surprise me, and I never had to force my self to do it, as I'm right-eye dominant, but it's very interesting!

Using the left eye means that your using the creative side of your brain... or something along those lines...(I heard this somewhere)

what amazes me even more is supposedly the right handed-left eye dominant trait is a recessive gene... that it isn't "normal" but look at the poll results so far..
Hermeto
25th of February 2007 (Sun), 00:14
Hand/eye dominance is genetic, but it could be changed with practice.
I can understand when some ‘old-school’ teacher insists on shooting with right eye.
I was taught the same way, back in old days.
Some types of shooting just require both eyes open and it’s better to learn the proper way from the beginning.
I am righty, hand and eye..

You might find less difficulty if you add a little eye relief so your face is not up against the back of the camera quite so much. An extra 15mm of eye relief can be accomplished with this gadget:

All us righties know you lefties are evil.
Even from ancient times, the Latin word for "right" is "dexter," as in dexterous." The Latin word for "left," however, is "sinister." Need I say more?
Then, on the other hand, being right-handed I'm not in my right mind, so what do I know?
But then, being right-handed, and left-minded, does that make me have a sinister mind?

I'm a lefty through and through (except for guitar playing), but shoot using my right eye - even though my left eye has far better acuity.

Interesting because I never could find a left-handed shotgun. However that wouldn't have solved anything because I'm right-eyed.
So I shoot left-handed, and am forced to use my left eye for sighting - fortunately this isn't quite as much as a handicap with a shotgun which is basically a "point and shoot" piece of equipment.
But whenever (seldom) I used a rifle, shooting left-handed and sighting left-eyed never produced very good results - is this why I seldom used a rifle?;)
Thanks Canon for making your cameras fit me - as a left-handed, right-eyed person, there is one thing in the world made for me. No wonder I like photography.

I have always wondered about this. I am right handed but left-eyed. As a kid I always struggled when shooting bb guns and didn't realize most people used their right eye.
I have the same problem when I try to use my right eye; I don't see anything unless I close my left eye, which is very hard to do, and even then the quality of my right eye view is very poor.
As for why the poll results skewed left; perhaps it has to do with the creative aspect and that creative people tend to be left-eye-dominant and photographers tend to be creative hence they have a higher proportion of left eyes.
I never had a problem shooting pistols but shooting rifles is cumbersome and I can't shoot left handed. I am curious though why some of you find it hard to shoot pistols. You can just center it with your eye no matter which hand it's in can't you?

Oh good, it isn't just me!
I write right, eat right, dribble a basketball left, shoot a basketball right, shoot a soccer ball right (preferably), punch left, and fence with either. Also, even though my left eye is far worse than my right eye uncorrected, when corrected the left eye is better because the right eye has a slight laziness.
In summary, apparently I'm a freak. :(
I guess this is just one more wierd combination that I have to put up with.

I used to use my left eye, untill I got to use Nikons a lot. You needed to pull out the transport lever a bit to activate the light meter... Also, it was nearly impossible to keep youtr eye to the VF while advancing the film. So I forced myself to use the right eye.
I also bought glasses around that time, since I found out my right eye was worse then my left ;)
Using your right eye is a must with a Leica M as well.
I mostly use my right eye now, unless I have difficulty focussing. That can be with a DSLR on a tripod, or with a MF or view camera...
I find using the right eye an advantage when using flash, since I can keep both eyes open, and see what's happening.
FWIW: I'm right handed and I've allways shot rifles and guns using my right eye.

I started out with my left eye, although I am right handed. I actually trained myself to use my right eye so I could keep the left open.. I also use an eye cup, which helps greatly. It creates a seal around your eye and blocks light out of the viewfinder. A well spent $20+... Now I don't have those annoying nose prints on the LCD anymore!

It actually took me a minute to think about it without having my camera right here, but I am right handed and use my left eye, one my left eye is better, it is also my dominant eye, but mostly it is most comfortable that way. As for then tutor you mention ~ change your course ;) It reminds of what my father told me, when he was young he was a left handed writer but the teacher regularly smacked his hand with a ruler forcing him to go 'right handed'.
So, the tutor is correct only in saying that cameras are designed for righthanded folk but how you use it to get the result is not affected by which eye you use. Afterall we are the most adaptable of species :D

Oddly enough for me it depends on whether I am shooting portrait or landscape. If I am holding the camera in landscape mode I use my left eye and close my right. If I am shooting in portrait mode (the mode I use most for sports) I put my right eye on the vf and keep my left eye open and on the action.

Typical school martinet stupidity.
I was born with a left eye that only semi-functions. When I was in 3rd or 4th grade, some dimwit school doctor (not an ophthamologist) decided I had amblyopia, so-called "lazy eye" syndrome. He put a patch over my right eye to force the left eye to work harder. Naturally, I could barely see. His response? "you'll see better with time.
I couldn't read anything, I couldn't see to write, I could barely locate the blackboard. They forced me to wear that patch every day for the remainder of the school year. I never saw any better through my left eye.
I barely passed the school year, and then only by "cheating" (sneaking peeks with my right eye whenever possible).
During summer break, I was examined by a state ophthamologist. He took one look and said I did not have ambyopia. What I had was deformed musculature controlling the focus of the lens. It was a birth defect, and the eye would never work properly. I should be especially careful of my right eye, as I had no backup (so to speak).
When I returned to school, the school doctor tried to stick the patch back on me. My parents showed him the results of the state exam, and he said the state docor was wrong and he was right. He'd seen amblyopia too many times to be wrong.
We went to the school board. The school board had me examined again by an independent ophthamologist. His determination? The state ophthamologist was right. The school doctor was dead wrong. I didn't have to wear the patch.
And my damned left eye is still non-functional these many, many years later.
As regards this thread, I am right handed and most definitely right eyed.
Depth perception? I don't need no stinking depth perception!

Well i've not visited this thread in a while! very surprised to see that infact there are actually more using their left eye than right.... Not what i was expecting at all!
I started this thread after hearing a tutor on a photographic course blast someone for using the wrong eye and also because of the problems it caused me using some of the manual settings on my 350d - well i found the solution to the problems caused when using the 350d..... Upgrade to the 30d!!!!! I've just upgraded to a 30d and no longer does my nose accidently turn the timer on and no longer do i have to take the camera away from my face to get to the av+/- button to change aperture when in manual!!! :D I think i'm onto something here, Canon should use this in their marketing to promote the 30d and pay me royalties! [or just give me 1d mkIII  ] as my poll shows, there are more users that use their left than their right eye....... what do you think, should i put this idea to canon?? ;) Canon, are you listening? if you need to know where to mail that 1d mkIII just holla!!!

Not correct. There are more respondents who use their left eye, not more users.
Your poll is flawed, and proves nothing (sorry, not trying to be insulting, but it's true).
Repeated statistical analyses have shown that more people use their right eyes than their left. And this is precisely why camera manufacturers design their cameras the way they do.
A few manufacturers have experimented with odd camera designs. They were abysmal failures.
Why don'y you design and market a camera periscope that will allow appropriate left-eye use? If you're right about a significant number of people wanting (or needing) to use their left eye, it should be a seller.

I have used my left eye with cameras since I started using them and that was over 30 years ago. Until now I have never thought about it, it has never felt "strange" it has never caused me any problems, but now that I have thought about it it will give me yet another excuse when the results turn out to be not as good as I had hoped for. And I guess all the good pictures were just lucky :-)

How many of use keep both eyes open?
I found after a few weeks of shooting sporting events where the camera was always to my eye that the eye I was holding closed would twitch fro the rest of the week....LOL So I started leaving it open...

That's just a side effect of focusing on sports too closely.

I just had a full eye test today, and the optomotrist told me that my left eye is stronger. This is strange because I have always used my right eye with the viewfinder. Maybe eye should try using my left eye?

also the fact that the camera designed to be put to your right eye means that when pressed to my left eye my nose is in the way!
I too am a left eyed/right hander and my nose got in the way too, until I bought the canon eyepiece extender. it makes the eyepiece protrude a bit from the camera body and gives your nose a bit of room. I still have a tiny bit of a problem with it, but not near as much now. I may try adding an additional extender to see if that helps.

I use my right most of the time, except when manually focusing. For some reason my keeper rate goes up with left eye focus. I sure miss the split screen focus from my film bodies.

So did I. That's why I got a split-prism screen for the 20D. Works great.
