Who thinks there will be a 40D? There is a poll running for this, but wondering if anyone has heard anything, seems to have gone quiet after the announcement of the 1D111.

I for one am gutted but not abandoning hope yet. I love my 400D, but feel I need something a little more robust and bigger, but having invested in so many EFS glass, dont really want the hastle of having to sell them all! The 1D111 to me sounds superb, all I could want, but I was really hoping for a new 40D that was going to be a match for the 5D, and compatible with EFS.

So I say come on Canon, give us something better to use with EFS glass other than the 30D! Dont us "amateurs" deserve a pro body, after all, some of the EFS glass aint cheep!

There's going to be one, it's just a matter of when. I was hoping it would be at PMA, but it doesn't look promising. But, after seeing what they've done with the MKIII I'm hoping that the 40D will have some serious upgrades, more so than the 30D did, so I'll be patient and wait. Up until now I've always been 1 model behind the curve, this time I'm going to hold out for the latest and greatest.

I think thats my sentiments exactly!

Maybe some of the features of the 1D111 will even trickle down to the 40D, such as live view. Dust protection and the 10MP sensor should be a given regarding the fact that both the 400D and the 1D111 sport them.

Do you think that Canon will stick to its '18-month cycle' and hence release the 40D in August or are there any other opportunities Canon could introduce the 40D?

live view Dust protection and the 10MP sensor should be a given

Interestingly, the three "improvements" I would least like to see implemented, if they come at a cost to possible improvements that will actually have a beneficial effect on image quality.

Give me improved ISO performance and better dynamic range any day - you can keep the toys and gimmicks...

I wouldnt call dust removal a toy or gimmick as its something that is being implemented to combat a problem, and it works. I reckon all new models will have this as standard, and so they should.

given the amount of dust complaints on the 5d whether they be real or imagined, I think auto dust removal is a must for all new cameras

i think they will. Why? because 1. less rez than the Rebel xti, 2. number 1 makes it hard to justify price to consumers, and canon doesn't like to put out a product, and let it die for months and months. i work at a store in minnesota, and barely anyone asks about the 30D anymore. they generally go in 12-18 month cycles, and with the xti release this fall, it's hard to imagine them not going on with the 30D. it's not like they have to re-invent the wheel or anything. they did it with the 5D and 1D markIIn 18 months ago. i'd bet on it!

I've been told it's going to be called the 50D...but that's probably just that persons assumption.

50D would make more sense, to accentuate the jump and to avoid the number 4 which is unlucky in asia

I understand that "four" is the unlucky number, not "forty"! They already have a 400D, the Rebel, so 4 is already used. It might not be 40D and could easily be 50D, why not? Why not a 2007D?

Yes, I definitely think there will be a replacement for the 30D but when, who knows? I wanted it desperately last week but no.......:(

I'm looking for it this week. That would be good.

4, 40, 50, I agree it may as well be a 2007D, why not a 2007D111xtiii.....its all irrelevant, what we want is a model that will bridge the gap a little more. Iagine if there was a 1D3 that would take EFs lenses, I for one would have my money on the counter. They can do it, the new 1D3 is a x1.3 crop...so I say again come on Canon! Not that they will take any notice here because if one is coming the decision is already made and its already developed! If :-(

I desperately want the 30D replacement. I was hoping that they would have one out this spring. I'm still shooting with an old 300D and I will be leaving for Africa in July, so getting an August or fall model will prove difficult.

I definitely believe that a replacement for the 30D is coming! What else could they do? They have to replace it at some time. Now is a good time to do that and any thing else is folly. In fact, I believe that this coming week is the right time to announce it. One week after 1DM3 and before PMA so that they could show it off, along with the exquisite 1DM3. They will have had a week to still shake the photographic foundations of the world with the "live preview" camera!

I'm looking at Wednesday the 28th as the announcement day for the 2007D! That might be a better number than 40D because this is the anniversary year for Canon!!
My reasoning is simple: Canon is on an 18 month cycle (I hope) for that range of cameras) and it has been much longer than that since the 20D. 2 1/2 years to be exact. The 30D, while a fantastic camera in it's right, is still a warmed over 20D, let's face it. There were no major changes beside the 2 1/2" screen and a couple other minor changes. Still a fantastic camera like the 20D but the technology is 2 1/2 years old. Cripes, that is ancient in the digital photography world. Ancient! The 20D was announced sometime around the pyramids in Egypt, it's that old! I love mine but it's growing whiskers and they're gray!!!

So, is the 2007D coming, yes of course. Why wouldn't it? What form it might take is up for grabs, DigicIII (folly if it isn't), dust removal, 3" screen would be nice, better viewfinder, and all of those other features we want. I also think we need to keep 1.6X to save the EF-S lens.

If Canon waits until this summer as one pundit as surmised then they are STUPID and you can tell them I said it. I have my money ready now for the 2007D and if I have to wait until summer or later, I'll spend it on something else and I don't want to do that.

I agree. The 30D is only a minor improvement over the 20D. I hope you're right in that they introduce it at the PMA, but sadly, I don't think so. Yes, it's an anniversary year for them, and I think they are going to waste it. There is no doubt that the 1DMIII is an amazing camera, but I don't think they will come out with anything else until the fall. You know, it makes me want to switch over to Nikon. Sure, Canon has them beat in the professional market, but I'm not a professional. I would consider myself an advanced amateur and Canon is behind Nikon, Olympus, and Sony right now. Sony for Chri*t's sake. They make stereos, not cameras!!!!!!

Right now the best thing Canon has for the pro-sumer market are the L-series lenses.

my take on it is this, I think the 30D and 5D replacements will be announced soon and I think the size of the PMA display supports this opinion

You really think the alpha is even better than the XTi? D200 can only hold it's own until 400iso. Gimmicks man. Don't let the hype bother you. at the end of the Day it's your image that matters. Check it out . On paper the D2Xs is pretty compareable to a Mk IIn but in terms of IQ there is nothing close at hi speed or hi ISO. It's not always about what stuff says on paper. At a aports event you would be suprised at how many pros show up and shoot with the 20/30D. A whole lot more than show up w/ the competition's cameras. It's because these guys understand that IQ is the name of the game. The guy at Ritz can tell you what ever you are willing to believe, but lots of times it's about a whole lot more than "features".

So before I throw this idea out, let's make sure we all understand that this is pure conjecture, and this is after all the Rumor forum.

Since Canon has virtually re-engineered the 1D with the MKIII and raised the bar, what is the possibility that they will raise the bar for the 30D successor and finally introduce the much-anticipated 3D? Especially in light of the prior post that observes the 20D/30D in use by pros, coupled with the Canon anniversaries this year, an additional Pro model could be a big hit. That would actually allow them to slot in another prosumer model between it and the xxxD series.

Food for thought.

Have Fun,

Im all for a pro series 1.6 crop camera, give it the features of a D200 plus a few from the new MK III with a canon 3rd gen sensor and image quality and a watered down version of the new ID's AF. maybe 11 AF sensors with 5 cross type.

Id buy one, but untill they come out with something much more substancial than the 30D im sticking with my 20D and current lenses.
