There are already about 20,000 people in the area without power due to downed power lines. This weather is supposed to continue until sometime tomorrow morning. This picture of the pergola covering our patio was taken through our kitchen window.

We still have power and are keeping our fingers crossed that it stays that way. This is some of the weirdest weather that I have ever experienced. Some areas around here were under both flood warnings and winter weather warnings. It is 29 degrees outside and just now, we saw a bright flash outside followed by loud, rolling thunder.
You are right about the potential photo ops. I'm anxious to see what tomorrow morning will bring.

Awesome shot Blane. Best luck for your power to stay on. And here's me sitting in 30C (86F) , light fluffy clouds and clear blue sky outside. Trouble is we in a MASSIVE drought with only about a years supply of water left for the South East corner of Queensland. We'd love the rain. I have cracks in my roof and walls because of the lack of water in the clay soil my house is built upon. Send the weather my way please.:D :D It's an amazing world we live in hey!

Well, I grew up in eastern South Dakota so it was Vikings and Twins for me. The Quad Cities are without a doubt NFCN territory. We have a bunch of Bears fans, Packer fans, and quite a few Viking fans. There are also a fair number of St. Louis Rams fans here.
Good luck with the weather. They were just discussing the "thunder snow" on our local news. We've got about 0.3" of ice so far but some areas nearby have gotten up to 1.5" of ice accumulation. Further north, they were talking about up to 12"-16" of snow before this is all over.

We got freezing rain here, but no snow yet. That's supposed to happen tomorrow. According to the extended forecast, it's supposed to be 55 degrees by next Thursday. Crazy weather!

That just LOOKS cold. I wish I could find it, but my grandparents sent me a snapshot from Seattle '99. In the photo, the ice sickles were over a foot long, but they were hanging at 15° from vertical, as the wind was so strong and constant!

The storm hit us a few hours ago. I guess We are far enough north so that we are getting mostly very very heavy snow. We have about 3 inches already and it's coming down hard. Guess tomorrow I'm gonna grab the camera and skis and head on out for some picture taking. :)

yup. going out tomorrow to take some pics while the wife grades papers.
the quad cities and iowa (i went to college at iowa state) is a mish mash of supporters for various teams.
it is snowing here.. btu still icy. i can hear the wind blowing it off the windows and it is definatly more icey than snow. i turned the ice maker on crushed ice and told the wife "this is basically what it is outside" after i took the dog out last. yuck. and i am supposed to fly out of ohare monday morning to PA...... wonder how delayed my flight will be?

Excellent photo -- love the symmetry! Stay warm and our fingers are crossed that your power holds on. I went to Atlanta Braves pitchers and catchers camp @ Disney near Orlando, Florida Friday -- no camera, sat in the stands in bright 75+ degree sunshine, had myself a beer at 10:30 AM and got sunburned. I figure heaven must be something like that day was for me. Spring training games start here next Wednesday and my four months vacation ends. I'm gonna try and paint myself a mental image of your photo then call it up in mid summer when we'll be sweltering in Florida heat.

According to this mornings paper, 63,000 people in Iowa and 27,000 in the Quad Cities region are without power this morning and many may not get their service restored until Monday or Tuesday. But, everything is fine in our neighborhood.
I got up early this morning hoping to go to a nearby park and take some pictures of ice encased plants and what not, but the temperatures are already in the mid-30's and all of the ice has melted. While the photographer in me is disappointed, that is great news for power crews who are trying to get the fallen trees removed and power lines back up.
Jerry - I'm envious! I'd love to spend some time at spring training. Good luck with the upcoming season.

I was hoping for the exact same thing and last night it looked as if it would happen. But upon waking this morning all I saw was a messy slush. Hmmm... very depressing.
