The more i use my camera the more i stay in munual, maybe my crama is just a fruit but AV mode leads to soft images, and often under exposed and TV also seems to lead to under ex. images.

Thus i'm always in manual, just wondering if i'm normal.

I use one of AV/TV/P/M depending on what I am trying to achieve.... I guess I use TV most as I spend most of my time shooting motor racing and want to force a shutter speed in order to get that "almost frozen motion" effect leaving just a bit of blur to the wheels so that it doesn't look parked.

I'll put "Av" since that's 70% of what I do, 25% Tv, 4% Manual, and 1% of the time I just hit the button without looking because I forgot to reset it from the last shot.

Most of the time Av, because it gives me control over the depth-of-field. I often use it in combination with exposure compensation, either + or -, depending on the situation.

Sometimes I use P and M modes. I use M with flash sometimes, because I want to control the depth-of-field and I don't want the camera to use a long shutter time to capture ambient light (which is what happens if you use flash in Av mode). When I use M mode with flash, I set the shutter speed to about 1/60.

I almost never use Tv, and I've never made a single photo on full auto (green square) or the other "dummy" modes. I'm always shooting in RAW, and those modes don't even let you use RAW.

timmyquest, if you get soft images in Av mode, it's probably because you're stopping down the lens so that the camera needs a shutter speed that's too slow for handholding, and you'll get motion blur.

When in manual does the meter tell you if you're under or over? Have you tried +1 EC when in Tv or Av?

Seems weird to me that Tv or Av would do that.

I use M mode most of the time, sometimes use Av or Tv depends on the job, but strange thing is i never tried to use P, seems i can use M mode fast enough to respond to the whatever i want to capture ...

Timmy,. I edited the question to ask "which mode do you use The Most" so it was easier to answer. :)
**************************************************

I use "P" about 40% of the time,. I find that with both "wheels" I get the same control as I would get with TV or AV... with added simplicity when I'm rushed.

I use AV and TV about 25% of the time for each, depending on the situation.

I use manual about 10% of the time.. but the requirements are pretty specialized fro me to want to go for manual. (long exposures etc..)

ohh, so some people do use P then ??

I am AV most of the time unless for to sport photo. By the way canon could get rid of all those useless program mode on the 10D (since there is a 300D now). maybe keep the dof, it is somtime funny to play with.

by the way timmyquest, how can the use of AV make pictures soft? ? ? ?

about 50% M, 30% AV, 20% TV/P/sports mode.

Now why did you not mention that before - never dreamt of wheeling in P mode.

Interesting article in mag last week where pro admitted that he leaves it on Tv ALWAYS

I use M mode most of the time. It forces me to think about what I need to do and helps me learn the camera better.

I gues AV the most (for landscape shots) but I'm always clicking that dial about in the "creative zone", all depends.

I'll even use the green rectangle mode if I've had a few drinks. Easier that way.

M mode always. Only time I've used Tv mode is in rock concerts.

I'm still just trying to get a feel for my new camera right now, so I've been shooting a lot in "P". However, I've also been experimenting in all different modes and using different features. :) I love this camera! :D

Just an added note,. personally,. I find that AV, TV and P are almost the same thing.. since they are all universally adjustable..

The only difference between TV and AV onbviously is which factor (aperture or shutter speed) is the one that is adjusted by the camera to maintain exposure.

With P again,. you still have total control,. even with exposure,. because there is allways compensation available... but,. since the Camera is trying to make the decisions,.. in difficult situations you find you have to overide the cameras choices far too often,. that is when I usually switch to AV, TV or Manual.

Why do I still shoot in P?

Beofre owning the 10D I knew Nothing about exposure,. shutter speeds, etc..

It was the 10D that taught me,. so to this day,. I still like to see what my "Mentor".. the 10D, thinks of a given situation,. before I decide what I think is the right choice.

As I say,. in P,. all I have to do is spin the wheels to get whatever setting I want

I'm still learning, so I use P but am weaning myself off to AV.

I did once shoot a gazillion pictures in TV by mistake... hence, I now know how to adjust contract & brightness in my sleep.

When I got my 10D I wanted a P&S with changeable lens. I never thought I would be interested in anything other than full auto :? Well a few days reading here and I find that I have never used Green other than the 1st day! I leave the camera on P for quick shots but usually go to AV or M for planned shots. I am not really sure what I use most other than I never use what I bought it for, the green "P" mode  I guess I have to vote P for now :?

It takes a real man to admit something like that

Probably about equally between AV & Tv - depends on the lens & light.

However I always put it on P when I put it away.

I also put it on P when I give it to someone else to shoot with.

Av the most, then Tv. Almost all M for flash.

I don't remember when I used the other modes -- well, I'm too lazy to make a switch.

I usually use Av or sometimes Tv or M. I find P frustrating to use, because the camera always tries to revert back its intial suggested value after just a few seconds. For example, if I want to use a slow shutter to blur running water, I might shift the program to 1/10 s and f/14. However, after just about 5 seconds the camera goes to sleep. When the shutter release is pressed half-way again, the camera reverts back to 1/100 s and f/5.6.

AV mode - 90% of the time...........

P mode - for taking pics with onboard flash (its genius!!!)

Green box - when I let other people use the camera :-)

what an excellent topic!

So is it better to use the sports mode for sports photos?

Manual always, and manual flash (except when fill flash is required, of course).

Hi I am new member to this auspicious group. I shoot almost always in TV with Safety shift enabled (In case I get overly "Creative"). Seems to work well for watersports action which is 99% of my business.

Curious to compare the 1dMk11 when it eventually arrives.

Ap when i need a certain aperture/depth of field

M when i need to avoid the flash trying to slow sync!

P (perhaps with prog shift) when certain shutter/aperture combinations are not relevant-like today, shooting arty postboxes in bright sunlight with the kit lens.It let me get on with the aspects on perspective and composition
I never use the pic modes as i would have to look up the book to find out what they do anyway.
I like the way the green mode has a built in alarm system
anytime i accidentally put it in green square the flash jumps up remending me of my mistake! Thanks for putting that feature in just for me canon :P

I use P most of the time.

For a waterfall I switch to Av and select the highest f-number possible and make sure I'm on ISO 100. I get good exposure and the slowest possible shutter speed.

For motor racing I use Tv, I set the speed that gives me a sharp car and a motion blurred background and wheels.

For something tricky like the moon which only fills a small % of the frame (too much black in frame = blown highlights, and the blown highlights are on the subject I am trying to capture) I use M, after taking the shot I check the histogram then adjust settings and try again.

For portraits I prefer Av to control the DoF.

The mode I use depends on what I'm trying to acheive, 8)

I leave the camera in P unless I have a specific need to change the exposure speed or aperture... (Like taking landscapes or freezing a bird's wings in flight). Then of course I switch to Av or Tv as required..

When I take time exposures at night, or special stuff like fireworks, I always use M. Actaully for fireworks, I set the shutter speed to bulb and manully control how long the shutter stays open using the remote release. Now That's full control baby :)

Just a note.. The 'canned' modes, (sports landscape etc) can all be duplicated by choosing the correct combination of settings in P, Av, Tv and M and the correct AF mode..

Sports mode for example puts the camera in Tv and sets the AF to AI servo (or just AI in the rebel). It probably chooses a faster ISO, (Although you can't see this).

The 10D and 300D have these 'canned' modes' to allow the camera to be used by shooters with less experience who don't want to take a photography course just to get better results photographing their kids soccer game.

The pro cameras, (1D, 1DmkII and 1Ds) don't have any special modes.. They only have Auto, P, Av, Tv and M.
