If you know what you want and will actually use it, don't go cheap. I learned this from the pros here. You really get what you pay for in a filter.

I have the same problem. I have a 70-200 f4 and don't know if I need to get a filter. I've considered getting the cheapest one just to get me through my trip to Mexico. The only plus I see would be to protect the lens, but that's what the hood does. I might look into an ND filter but I don't know how often I'd use that. I suppose looking for reviews would be the most helpful way to see which ones are good and bad, right?

Don't bother with a filter, just be mindful of the front element, keep your hood on, and buy a lens pen to brush off any dust or waterstains...

I recommend a CPL for a good first filter. It's the most useful filter for outdoors. I just bought the Hoya Super Quality CPL polarizer at B&H. I've never paid that much for a filter before, but it's worth it.

I like the idea of having a very high quality UV filter on at all times. It gives me more confidence shooting in some situations. I always use a hood, but a hood doesn't really help when sand or dirt is blowing.

Just make sure you buy a B+W UV filter and not a cheap one.

Clean the filter, not the lens.
