View Full Version : Please help me find a new camera

I am new to this forum & new to digital cameras.I am looking to purchase one within the next few days.I am leaning towards the s50.Is this going to be a good camera to get for someone with little digital camera experience?I have seen a lot of reviews about this camera.And although everyone is not happy with it,I believe I would be with my limited experience.Any suggestions,recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

It all depends on what you want.. Finding the perfect camera depends on what type of shots you will be taking. Simple point and shoot, or are you looking for something that you can learn and grow with. What type of prints do plan on making and what is your price cap.
Find out whats important to you, do you want to be able to mount external flashes or take extended shots using a bulb setting, a large LCD or having an EVF for bright sunny days. Do you need a telephoto lens blah blah blah....
You cant go wrong with a Canon. The S50 is an excellent camera with great optics and good color reproduction. IMHO I think you could do better in that price range. Check out Nikon Coolpix 5700 or the Olympus C750 Ultra Zoom, or just buy them all.

I was asking for honest opinions.And I appreciate getting them.What is wrong with honesty?The fcc is not sensoring this forum.

The Nikon suggested is a bit too much for me.I am a begginer & don't even understand some of the things in the review.The Olympus is a little interseting.I definately like the 10x zoom feature.Does anyone else have any opinions between the two?

I would suggest the Canon A60 or A70. They are easy to begin with and then to expand beyond auto. I would not buy another HP camera because I have had very bad results with them.

s50 would be a great camera to start with. I sarted with an s30. I still kick my self in the arse for getting rid of it.

Another I would consider is the new Canon S1.

the S50 is a great cam, i wish i still had mine. i was able to blow
up some very nice 11x17 prints! all in full auto mode. it also goes full
manual, plus raw witch is very cool. i sold it to get a G3.

I was in the same predicament looking at the S50, S400, and other non Canon Brands. Reading reviews, the Canon had better features. The S50 was no lighter and no smaller than my old Olympus 1.3 MP. I liked the S50s features which was similar to the G5 but without the ability to add lenses or external flashes. Having a 35mm SLR, I didn't need the frills and opted with the S400. I found through experimentation with settings that this camera is more than adequate for day to day shooting of stills, my child and for work. If action photo's, cityscapes and landscapes are your style, the S50 is a great option (especially if this is going to be your only camera). I saw a review from a magazine that showed awesome action stills from a Baseball game and nice evening shots of a city using the S50.
