In the interests of helping my fellow photographer get their "L" lens. I have decided to start this thread on "CHEAP EATS". This way you can save money towards a "L" lens.

So let me start first...

Where: San Jose, California.
Establishment: McDonald.
What: Did you know you can have a very nice meal at McDonalds for $3.25 incl. tax?

Options are

1) McChicken sandwich only $1.00

2) Double Cheeseburger sandwich only $1.00

3) Two apple/cherry pies for $1.00

I get three of any one of these combination for $3.25 flat and just drink lots of water! More L lens here I come!

Regards,
Ferdinand

LOL...
A friend of mine owns the Mc Donald on Stevencreek next to Central Computer (or the BMW dealer). He HAS BEEN complaining about customers who come in for the cheap item and asked for water instead of soft drinks. The profit margin on food items are paper thin and it's the soda sales that help the bottom end the most.
Now I know who the cheapskates are...But this guy is a Nikon die hard.

Regards,
Alan

If you drop in there, ask for David and tell him I send you.

Where: Lafleurs (corner of Blvd des Sources and Hymus)
What: Steamies and poutine
Cost: $4.95 with a med soft drink.
Defination: Steamie-hotdog steamed. You get 2 in the deal. Ask for them all dressed and you got your veggies for the day.
Poutine-french fried potatoes with fresh cheese curds layered in, covered in a thick brown gravey.
This meal will stick with you for at least 3 days. Imagine the savings

Alan so like McDonalds are owned by Nikon users? :) MMmm.... I should ask for more water then :)

Ian, that would be in Montreal I assume? :) Mmmmm I sure wish we have something like that here, be nice to switch from burgers to steamies once in a while :)

But, much healthier. You'll be more in shape to heft the heavy weight of an L-lens for much, much longer periods. Also, the massive amounts of salt in the "flavor-packets" will help replace the salts lost in sweating out carrying all that glass around ona hot day.

Top Ramen. Morning, noon or night. ;)

Y'all do realize that there are certain food items that are dirt cheap (besides dirt, that is).

Eggs. What can I say? They're cheap.
Ducks are a dime a dozen right now, and there's apparently too many of them. Best to carry a Mossberg along with that Canon when you go on a "shoot". (Pay attention, Ian) :)
Don't forget the lowly potato (or is that "potatoe") - The Irish allegedly lived on them as a staple for centuries.
Oranges are free if you live in Florida - that is, if you don't get caught.
Road Kill - y'all need some protein in your diet. Squirrel and Possum combine to make some excellent stew.
Fish - Carp and Sheephead are very underrated. Cooked properly, they are - well, tolerable. Barely....
Insects - Boiled ants make a delicious stock for that Racoon soup you were wanting to make next week.
Acorns - They're not just for squirrels any more.
Oak leaves - besides their obvious utility, they produce an excellent salad. Be sure not to use leaves that have already been utilized for their other purpose.

That's all I have for now.

You know what the best thing is about Possum innards don't you? They're just as good the next day.

:D :P

I could stand to lose 10-15KG and get fitter.

So I am on a diet, no special food, just eating less. Healthier and cheaper.

Exercise - Going out with the 10D, lots of walking while carrying a decent weight. Cheaper than the gym.

First I will pay off my Visa.
Second I will save for L Lenses.

I'm thinking the 28-300 L IS for a nice "walk around" lens to replace my 28-135 IS (Nice, but not L). Also a 70-200 f2.8L IS for a nice fast low light lens and a 17-40 f4L for wide angle.

My 550EX should be here next week, the only thing my kit is desperately short of is L glass.

Aha! Do the cardboard sign thing. Just be sure to park the BMW around the corner and take off that Rolex too. ;)

The traditional Scots method.

1 large (5Kg/11lb) bag of Grampian Scotch Porridge Oats (£3.20).
1 bag Salt
Water

Boil and eat thrice daily. Monotonous but it works. Should last for about 1 month as long as you are not greedy.

(When I was a student my flat mate lived on this diet for just over a month)

Another alternative... biodegradable packaging chips also known as "Packing peanuts". These are either starch or corn and wheat based, water soluble and edible.

p.s. Do NOT confuse these with the polystyrene type which are NOT edible.

Jim, Wouldnt the BMW and Rolex already be converted into L glass and accessories at this point though?

Just in case some how you're still in possesion of these two items, make sure that you remove all BMW (and Acura too!) emblems from the car before parking it around the corner. For the Rolex and L glass, follow this tip found in one of the EOS forums: leave 'em in a diaper bag (preferably with some smearing of let's say...pumpkin on the outside?), throw a couple of diapers on the backseat for good measure.

A couple of weeks in a UK hospital complaining of a made ailment makes for cheap eats and if you remember to take your camera there is a good chance that you will find at least one nurse to model for you

What about growing your own fruit and vegetables in your garden.... 8) cheap and healthy!

Some time ago I remember there was something on the TV about a guy who did an experiment - for a month, he only ate at McDonalds. His cholesterol went up and all kinds of other things went wrong and he got depressed.

Gawd this is suppose to be about CHEAP EATS :P I can see that a lot of us has gotten off topic hehehehhee....

If you can afford it, you can have Mr.Chau or your neighbourhood family run Chinese Fast Food, and for under $5 you can get a nice balance meal! That is only $1.75 more than McDonalds, and you get to live longer and yeah no tipping! :D

Where - Burgess Hill , England

Restarant - Cafe Stube

Nearest Photo reseller - Park Cameras

Distance between two sites - 3 minute walk across park

You should just be in the "OMG what have I done" state when you reach the cafe. Main courses £5.50, german coffee is excellent. Eat now whilst you are still in shock, this will buffer you for the month ahead. I always consider it as part of the price of the lens

Best regards

My personal favorite is to visit "home" often. Nothing like parasiting off Mom and Dad to keep food costs down. And, the best part, is you get to keep the leftovers if you want!

Awesome idea David, plus your parents will be happy and they get to brag to their friends what a nice son they have, how he always visits them, seeing how they are and how much you care for them. Awesome indeed! :)

What happens when your parent disowns for for blowing your wad on silly things like a camera lens instead of getting properly married and give them some grand children? :(
