so here are some photos from my colleges tennis match. It was indoors and the conditions were great so I was shooting at a lower iso for less grain. and w/o further ado...

alright, so some of them still had some blur and I would have benefited more if I went up with the iso for a faster shutter. but for the most part I was happy. I still had a good one that my editor liked and put into the school paper which was the first photo.

i don't know about you but everytime my paper asks for somebody to shoot the tennis matches i duck and hide in the corner. Don't get me wrong i love playing the sport, but shotting it gets pretty boring for me...it's soooo repetitive.

Enough about me...congrats on getting a pick in the paper. I really like the second one, very interesting angle, you might want to straighten the horizon on that one. But as you mentioned, a higher shutter speed definately would have helped you out.

I like the best. It has good DOF, and that's the same racket I play with. Nice!

problems with these photos is less of the action or player, more of the background... bland backgrounds and sports don't mix. as a sports photo editor for my paper, i refuse to use any shots that don't have a mass of fans in the background, unless it's for a profile article. considering it's an indoor court though, not much you can do about it... luckly, outdoor season should be starting in two weeks or so for NCAA (should be all divisions) teams, so have fun with all that

btw, if you had taken the second shot about 1/4th of a second earlier, it would have been an awsome shot... everyone needs 10fps.. life...

yeah...there wasn't much of a crowd there for our side. the guy that you see on the right in red in the second photo is actually my sports section editor. he did the interviews while I got to shoot the photos.
and i would love to have 10fps but that's just a good dream right now...maybe if they lower the price enough i may get the 1d for 8.5 frames...anything to upgrade from my 10D.
btw, who are you the sports photo editor for?

thank you! after seeing your own photos I'm happy to be able to get such a praise from you. I'm very jealous that you got to shoot a pro tourny and seeing some great players out there too like blake and clijsters. and definitely great photos that you have there.

Yes Luke i've had the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 for bout 2 weeks, it's great, very fast AF and sharp pics. Only problem that takes some getting used to it that the zoom ring operates in the opposite direction to a Canon and it is a little weighty, but once you're used to that it is a little gem. The pictures in the following threads are all using the 70-200 and i think I'll only improve as they were all early uses of it.

you won't believe this but I'm actually using a d70 with an 80-200 2.8 lens. it's a little iffy on the focus and I have to wait a split second till I can take a shot so I can get a lucky streak goin with this lens but then lose the timing after like a timeout or so. but I do want to get my hands on a 70-200 2.8 non IS. it's either that or a 24-70 2.8 lens which i want to get. but I did use a 16-35 2.8, btw I have a 10D as well. thanks to disney I have a d70 also. but yeah, I shot some wide angle stuff at the last college home bball game for the season. totally loved it and now I'm thinking about getn that instead. I will post some images as soon as I edit some.

was'nt really until i just saw your photos, and am now seriously considering it, your basketball photos are amazing!
i have the 70-200mm F/4L IS, havent really had alot of chances yet to use this lens the weather here in england has been terrible, and i doubt it would handle low light scenes anywhere near as good as your Sigma!
looking forward to going on holiday to the island of white later this month to get some time to test this lens out, but butcha you have seriously put the idea of getting the sigma into my head!
great photos mate!
cheers for replying
