OK guys I had a once in a life time oportunity this weekend, I was at the NASCAR race in Fontana and they had the Metal Mulisha guys riding. So with my camera I started to take some pics, I went and found there PR lady and gave her my car card so I could show her my pics. Turns out she needed a photographer, so she asked if I could cover this event for her and we could talk busniess later. So I did and took about 2000 pics over the 2 days. So now I am looking threw them and will prob have about 600 good sellable pics and was wondering what to charge> So I filled this out (see below)

Catagory........Directly to the copanym uses are unknown

Circulation.....Could be for home or ad

Size.....Large Quality JPEGS

Quantity....600 sellable pictures

Period....None set at this time

Time charged....Shot 2 days to cover the event.

As I was leaving there PR person said she wanted a CD of the pic, so my plan is to burn a DVD with all the retoutchd pics. So what would the Hgh and low price be. Thanks everyone!!!!

In the future, talk business first! Now, you are in a bit of a quandary.

yea, now you are stuck. If I were in this situation, I'd charge $500 for the cds/dvds. If she baulks at the price, host them on a gallery somewhere, send her the link and set a price per photo (if prints). If she still wants them on a cd, set price levels like 25-75 shots are $$, 75-125 are $$, etc., etc.

Essentially you're working backwards. Then again, you had no idea that this would turn into a gig. So, since you still own the pics and she seems to want them, you're in the drivers seat. I suggest you charge what you feel your time and services are worth.

600 pics and they get the copyright? I would imagine somewhere between $5000 and $15,000 would be a realistic price. But good luck getting it!

At least $10 per photo, though that's what I sell a print for without any way to reproduce it. chtgrubbs has it about right.

I work for a photographic retailer, and as the printing manager of the store, i see many people trying to print off other peoples pictures (Professional etc), and for them to actually have the pictures, i need a copyright release.. One example i saw was a CD with 4 images on, they had the copyright permission, the customer gave me a copy of their invoice, and the photographer charged £400, thats £100 EACH! Thats for the image, the CD and the right to reproduce the pics. So i guess, its down to what other people in the field are doing, and making your prices competive. IMO, if you sell the copyright, make sure you still have your logo or mark on the corner of the images, that way if another person admires the picture, they know where to come for other images (Or ask them to always credit you)... Owning Copyright if your not the photographer is usually something extremely expensive anyway..

That's what I do with portrait sessions if they ask for a CD. It's $300 for a CD with 30 images.

I usual try to work the following deal....

Prints purchased from me
CD of low res prints (i.e. 4"x6" 240 ppi) for some amount
Then I stipulate that they can buy the high res originals on CD after 2+ years for $200 per session.
Prints of edited images still have to come from me or be purchased individually for electronic versions.
