A professional Lacrosse organization is requesting a proposal for photo sales. Let's call them 'sponsor' or 'client'
This sponsor/client has a strong brand and an excellent reputation.
I am, at best, a good part-time AM.
However, I do have about 100 very nice 'keeper' Lacrosse (LAX) photos from this past winter's instructional league and games.
They were shot indoors, low light, and, with PP they are coming out very nicely.
So, in short order, I have come to know that the results are worth quite a bit, considering the sheer amount of time required to not just shoot the events, but everything that goes into it.... plus, with all appropriate appreciation, help from POTN members to crash-course me in shooting at ISO 3200.;)
So, how do I maximize income from this?
Here's what I think I can sell them on:
-Images licensed for their promotional materials incl. website
-Images offered to parents for outright sale as prints
-Images signed by the owners (they're ex pros)
-LAX sports cards, possibly full photo packages
I have not yet opened full discussions. Rather, I stalled so that I could get POTN member input first.
I know you've been asked this about 10,000 times, and I've read almost the entire 'sticky' thread on 'what to charge' and searched the web on price, only to come up with roughly some idea of what is going on but nothing specific enough to apply to this situation.
The sponsor/client organization is run by three brothers, but I happen to know that they can afford proper prices, and I want them to pay those prices. Why? Because there is a market, and I don't know them, so odds are they know what the work is worth and I do not. (They used to be professional LAX players, Spainish National Team; they've been around)
So, to refrain the same question one more time:
[A] What do I offer in terms of licensing? How much should it cost them?
[B] They have asked me to do professional work, specifically to shoot a semi-pro event series. I said only that I'm interested.... And I have exactly no idea what to charge if I did.
**OR**
I have a pretty close aquaintance who is a full-time professional photographer who does do sports work. Should I call him and let him deal with this in return for a cut? Why? Because he does know what to charge and he can staff the shoots coming up, whereas I'm snagging a second body to get ready tonight; the shoots start in 3 weeks.
Now, say I did go to the actual pro; sure, duh, he takes my money for nothing, walks with the client, I see him a few times a year... How does that get sorted out? Do pros even pay referral fees, handle sublicensing?
**OR**
Sell the pic rights on a DVD for some fixed-cost, turn down the shoots -- because if I have to ask these kinds of questions I should not be doing the work. (You can actually say that; it might be the right thing to do)
POTN counsel, please!
