On March 30th I have been asked to shoot some boxing matches. I have permission to get right up against the ring.
I have the 85mm 1.8, 70-200 F4L, 17-40F4L, and 28-105mm F3.5. What lens do you suggest? I was thinking the 85mm. I will be shooting the event with my 30D, should I use AI SERVO and center point?
This is for a neighbor, his 16 yr old son is boxing in the Golden Goves and he would like some photos. Should I use my 580EX flash also?
Any other tips for shooting this event would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest as fast a lens as possible, assuming the light is going to be way below par, so by the looks of your gear, the 85mm f/1.8 is the only choice for action shots. Although the 70-200mm f/4 is slow for indoor use, you may be able to get some shots between rounds, in the corners. I wouldn't use the flash - the organisers may well allow it, but I'm certain you'll generally be frowned upon if you use it during the fight. Unless it is an absolute necessity, I would leave it on the second body until the corner shots / winner announcement.

I'm not a boxing photography expert, but did shoot ESPN's 2 Friday Night Fights at the local armory tthree weeks ago. I had an overlooking balcony view right into the ring.
I used the 85 1.8 on my XT and the length was about perfect. I did not need or use flash. The lighting was good (TV, ESPN) and I did not use AI Servo. I focused center point. Shutter speed around 500, F2.2, ISO 800 or 1600 (I can't remember). The photos turned out great.
I'm not sure what lenses the guys at ringside were using. I think the 85 1.8 ringside on an XT might be longish, but it would have given me a much more up close and personal photo/view.
If the length is right for you, the 85 1.8 is certainly up to the task. Have fun, good luck.
