Hi Folks,

Need some help. I'm looking for a software package to help me manage my RAW files. I like to take my 1GB HD out of my Canon G1 and copy the hole directory structure to my computers HD. I have quite a few of these directory structures. What I want to be able to do is group the original RAW files into their appropriate directories and then write them to a CD so that If I ever need to go back to the original files all I have to do is pop the CD in and go. The kicker is that I want to be able to have 2 or 3 of these photo groups open at once and drag and drop from one group to another.

Anyone know of any Photo Management software that will allow me to do this?

Take a look at ThumbsPlus from Cerious. I drag and drop from my CF reader to my HD all the time. You can get a trial download from:

http://www.cerious.com

Note: I have no interest in this product other than as a satisfied and registered user.

You could also look at IMATCH at www.photools.com its as comprehensive in its capabilities as most people would ever want and it handles Canon CRW files

ThumbsPlus also directly accepts the Canon .CRW files via a free plug-in. I forgot to mention that.

Another way to do what you're trying to accomplish is with a Compact Flash card reader. Be sure to get one that can read your media. The software makes the card reader look like another drive to your computer. Simply drag the files you want to any directory (folder) on your hard drive (or CD-RW).

You can also use the same media as a temporary storage device for moving files from computer to computer.

These card readers are pretty inexpensive.

I break my files down into People, Places, Things and Events then set up separate subfolders (eg. Aunt Maud's Birthday Party, Yosemite Trip, etc.) Using the built-in Windows thumbnail viewer function, I can preview my pix without additional software.

My face is red... the Windows thumbnail function won't display your RAW files. Sorry for the confusion.
