Hey gang, on the peninsula, but want to get included on the list, on the off chance that my kids' schedule will let me go somewhere. I'ver read pieces and bits of this thread, and would love to get together for a shoot somewhere over the summer.

I'll second that..let's have a shoot together sometime and also lunch/dinner to get to know each other better. I haven't met a single soul from POTN in person! lolz

Nobody replied about this? Anyone going to be there or will I be better off drinking my beer while posting on the forum instead? :)

Man I really wish I could come on the 18th...that weekend I'm moving apartments so it's going to be hectic..and then there would be guests over...I'm in for anytime after June 15th.

Correct, The 1D3 party won't be till June now.

So how about drinks somewhere on the 18th. I'll throw out 6.30 at Rascals just off 50 and Bradshaw as that should be fairly easy to get to. That way we at least have a plan. I'll be there, who else wants to show? :)
Can I assume that we will go out the next day and do some shooting? If it's just one evening of drinks, I don't think it's worth the 6 hour round-trip drive. But if we are going to do something for the weekend, I would love to come up.

That's exactly what I'd love to be doing, there are some great places for photography around here. Just seems hard to get anything organized ever. I think I'll look at the calendar with my wife and try and find another weekend to see if we can get something planned.

We are free most weekends and have talked about going up to Old Town and surrounding areas.

I suggest to just pick a date and a place and stick to it. Not everyone will be able to make it but when there is a date and a place, a lot of folks will clear the time and come.

Sometimes when I plan a POTN meet-up, I get a huge response (28 people) and sometimes a small one (5 people), No matter, we always have a great time.

The Jazz Jubilee, which pretty much takes over Old Town and part of Downtown, is May 25 - 28th. It should make for some great shots with all the bands and people walking around.

Yep, lots of opportunities for action shots and party shots during the jubilee for sure. Have a great time, I am envious. Please post some goodies.

I got some great shots at the last year. It's close to my house so I also got some good shots just from standing on my driveway as the Blue Angels did circuits.

Where's the airshow?

I recall about a month or so after 9-11 we (fire department) got a call about a plane flying over Folsom and then to Mather Field expelling some kind of fumes or gas. Cops everywhere, fire fighters galore. Turned out to be a woman pilot, very famous, who does air shows all around the USA. She was expelling whatever it is that they do to look like smoke during the air shows. So close after 9-11 it was a big deal and everyone was so on edge. After the incident, a buddy of mine in St. Louis said I was foolish not to get an autograph as she was famous. Anyone know who that might be? For her day job she is a captain with one of the big airlines.

Still waiting for the M3 and get together to meet you fine Sacramento neighbors.

Mather.

Here's a few from last years show. It was well done, my kids had a great time.

And here's the official link

So who else would go to the air show? I'll be there, I'll post when I figure out what day.

Oh, and anyone else interested in aircraft needs to head over to the new California Aerospace Museum.

I'm friends with the a few of the people involved in getting it off the ground so I have to pimp it at every opportunity. :)

I'll TRY to go. With my back, it is a day by day issue if I can go out and about. So I'll say I am about 75% sure I will go. As we get closer, I'll watch here to see if we can meet up if you and others wish.

What if you had a set of wheels........:D I'll be heading out to the airshow on the 9th. For the guys that went last year, any suggestions on parking. I heard it was a nightmare getting in and out.

Traffic was heavy but it wasn't too bad. Getting off the freeway an exit early and taking Folsom may help. Traffic was backed up onto the freeway. It was also the first time last year so hopefully they will be better organized this year.

Joe-
Bring a lawn chair or some sort of comfortable folding chair. You can just kinda find a place to camp out and shoot photos. You'll have all day to cruise at your own pace to see the static displays! At one of the aviations boards they are considering the roster of demos and planes one of the best in Norcal. Hope your able to make it. I'll be out there Saturday!

Camera bags are fine. At least they were last year. You'll see plenty of L glass down by the fence nearest the flightline. I've got a 70-200 4 and I was left feeling quite inadequate. :)

I saw the air show on the news this evening. Wow, that new fighter jet is awesome.... F-22?

I couldn't make it. I didn't sleep at all last night. I went to bed this morning and finally went to sleep around noon! I just got up a half hour ago. Crazy way to live due to the pain and drugs. I wish I could go tomorrow, it looked like a lot of fun, but I will probably just be going to bed about that time. Bummer. I look forward to seeing some pics here.

Well, San Diego this weekend, so next weekend would probably work for me. I'll have to check with the Warden to make sure she has no plans, but if not, which is preferred, a Saturday or Sunday? I'd also think maybe around 2:00 to 5:00? Let's hear some ideas.

Oh, I live in Fair Oaks near Madison and Hazel. I will post directions before the gathering. As I said, I can't host a lot due to back. I will let folks bring their own CF or SD cards and play with the M3 if they wish. I will limit the number of multiple shots that folks will want to take just to listen to it. We can do a few, but I don't want to put on three thousand shots on one day when I won't do that in one year normally. Sound fair? As I said, once everyone is here, we can do a couple of blasts though. I haven't even done ONE yet!

I figured at first a barbecue, but not sure I am up for that much work. Maybe I will get the makings and let people cook for themselves. I will supply meat, (dogs and burgers) as well as soda and beer, potato salad, chips and a few other minor things so as not to see anyone starve. I don't need anyone to chip in for $$ but it would be helpful maybe for someone or two to bring a couple of bags of ice as our ice maker won't supply that much on a hot June day. I think I have ice chests though.

Folks should bring some of their better glass also. That way people can test different glass out. Heck, if I let people use my nM3, maybe you will feel comfortable to share your stuff with others who want to see stuff too. I will let people sue anything in my arsenel. I am adding a 300mm f4l Is next week.

Feedback on these ideas is welcome and as we get closer, a head count would be helpful Anyone willing to volunteer to get a head count and then let me know the final number so I can plan on the food purchase would be thanked for their effort.

I live at the end of a culdesac on half an acre, so not a lot of room for long shots, but some. I have tons of flowers, and a large garden to shoot and a relatively active hummingbird feeder.

Joe

Sounds great, I'll bring my kit along. Nothing to unusual, I think the only lens I have people may not have used is a Lensbaby 2.0. I guess we need a shot of a 1D3 with a lensbaby on it. :) The latest technology meets no technology.

You pick a day and we'll see who can show up. I can make it to either. I can definitely bring some ice too.

And, have fun at the graduation!

Sounds like a cool idea to me. We can always split the work and have different people provide food like a potluck if you want. I go by madison/hazel all the time. My vote is for a Sunday but that's me. Take it easy guys.

joegolf68
15th of June 2007 (Fri), 10:18
Sunday would work. I just need someone for a head count now and to ramrod getting the word out. I don't mind putting up for the meat, drinks, potato salad, and chips.

One lens that I'd really like to see if anyone has is that Pelneg, Peleng, whatever.... it is the fisheye lens. I think I'd like to try one before buying. I can't recall the name, and am too tired to go look it up, lol.

So Sunday afternoon? Or Sunday morning? I think about four hours would be my max, depending on how I feel. If I feel lousy that day, which is about 50-50 due to pain and drugs, the gathering would still be on, I'd just delegate some host type stuff like monitoring the coals in the barbecue. Oh, I'm lazy too, hehehehe.

I'll PM Roger20D, I think he was really hoping to come. What four hour perid seems good, keeping in mind it might be really hot? We could start earlier, like 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and have some morning cool weather which is nice too. I don't know if this would ruin the church goers, of which I am not.

Edited, new info!!

I was afraid that this might be an issue due to the 4th of July being so close. I am not set in cement on this date. We could do it the week after that. We could do it on a Saturday, but Sat the 30th would probably be the same issue, the weekend everyone celebrates the 4th.

Hahahaha, I just noticed that June has only 30 days! There is no June 31st. lol. Shows just how awake I am.

Would July 8th work for everyone? I am just going back and deleting references to the 31st and won't post a date until we have a consensus.

I could do it June 30th. Otherwise I'm not around until July 21st. I'd love to be there but I'd also feel bad if it was held up just for me, Really its whenever work best for you first, and the largest number of other folks second.

Yes, people will help you with your DSLR at the party, or they get no hot dogs. lol

Well, I guess we will never get a date where everyone is available. I am shooting for this date as of now. Greg20D you out there? I'd like to hear from a few others also. Some folks must not be subscribed to this thread who were earlier excited about a meeting. A shame if any locals miss this.

You are correct, this is the wrong thread!

If someone here knows, I'm sure they will be glad to give you the info. But I suggest you also post in the marketplace section. You can also use yellowpages.com and also check out the USA Canon site for dealers, which will give you limited info. This is a Sacramento thread and we are 100 miles away from SF and my guess is most folks here buy from BH or other online retailer so as to avoid higher prices and California sales tax. Good luck and enjoy your visit.

My nsuggestion would be to order from BH overnight mail, have your parents pick up the stuff when it arrives and save a ton ofcash, and lots of shopping by your parents.

If you need someone to provide and address, and no one from SF volunteers, you can send it to my house and your parents can stop by here and pick all the stuff out. It will save you lots of cash to do it that way, unfortunately, that is the way the system works!

I am in, please do let me know !!... Is there a list that can be assembled?...

joegolf68

Ok, we are ON!!!

Oops, let me call my wife at work before I even hit the reply button.... heheheh.

Ok, I've got the warden's approval for this, so we are DEFINITELY on for this Saturday, June 30th between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.

I will have some soft drinks, I will have the barbecue running for hot dogs and burgers and have some chips and maybe potato salad. Not a big deal, but enough to keep people from going hungry.

I suspect we will just relax, play with the different cameras and lenses that people bring. Come on now, bring your stuff with you. How fair is it to use other people's stuff and not want anyone to touch your equipment? Even if you only have a kit lens, I might be interested as I have never even seen one, really!

I will have the Mark III out for play. I don't really want to put thousands of actuation's on it, but I think it is fair for us to take a couple of ten bursts so everyone can see and hear it, as well as allowing you to put in your own CF or SD card in it so you can take some pictures home and see what they look like compared to your own camera. My lenses will all be available if someone wants to test them. If no one brings a 30D I have one for people to test also. I will be selling the 30D very soon, I promised one guy I would hold it for him until the end of the month as he wants to buy it. It has less than 2,000 shots on it and it is pristine, so if he doesn't take it, maybe someone else will want to look at it.

Anyone out there have a fisheye lens, in particular, the Penling (sp?) as I am interested in buying one of those but it would be nice to see and shoot one first. Other than that, and/or a 400mmm and 500mm, I am done with purchases of lenses barring hitting the lotto. I would like to try the new Canon wide lens, what is it, something like the 16-35 2.8 Mark II? If it is better than the IQ on the 17-40, I'd buy one of those I guess. lol

Ok, who volunteers to maintain a guest list right here? I need someone to step up and maintain a list of those coming to the "party" Saturday. I will need to buy goodies by Friday afternoon and it would be a big help for someone to head this part up so I know how much stuff to buy. Also, if you plan to attend, please let us know NOW, the sooner I get the list together, the better. Also, I ask the person who volunteers to also go through this thread and email and/or PM those who have been in this thread showing interest and letting them know the time and date just in case they have not kept up with this thread.

Thanks.

I suspect we will just relax, play with the different cameras and lenses that people bring.

as well as allowing you to put in your own CF or SD card in it so you can take some pictures home and see what they look like compared to your own camera.

My lenses will all be available if someone wants to test them. If no one brings a 30D I have one for people to test also.

I'll have all of my personal stuff in my backpack for anyone who wants to play. I've written a few lens reviews here so I'm also thinking this may be a good opportunity to do some quick comparison test shots to add to the head-to-head section.

I'd love to take a few photos with the Mk3. I think if I compare them too much to shots from my 300D I may end up with a tear in my eye. :)

And, looking forward to seeing a couple more of your lenses. The 300 particularly as its one I've had my eye on.

I'll be heading up from the western tip of Rancho Cordova (Bradshaw and 50 area) if anyone would like to carpool. That way we won't park up the neighbourhood to badly.

I have a large concrete parking pad to the side of the house that can park half a dozen cars or so. Anyone who is POSITIVE their car has no oil leaks or other leaks that would stain the cement is welcome to park there. Just enter the driveway and park on the north side so any car leaving from the garage can come and go.

I was just checking the head-to-head part of the lens archive. I'd be really interested to see 17-40 vs 17-85 or 17-55. 17-40 vs the 18-55 and 17-70 (Sigma) have already been done. Anyone got a 17-85 or 17-55 to bring? Looks like we'll also have a couple of 85s with us too.

Great news that you can make it over!

I suspect we will mostly be "chilling" and taking pictures here at the house. I don't have a huge yard, but it is nice with flowers, a garden, trees and all, but not much of an area to let out a telephoto except in the front yard down the street shots. Some may want to go out and about to see if there are sites to shoot, but I can't think of anything close by and I am not going to let my stuff leave the house as I am too annal about something getting damaged away from my site, sorry.

As for being awkward around the Mark III I might be the only one with hands on and I haven't even had it very long myself, so don't worry about that!

We almost all will be strangers to each other. I will ahve met only one person previously (Roger20D.)

I agree with Joe, this is more about saying hi to a few other Forum folks than going out and about to take photos. I'm sure we will take plenty, but thats not the primary reason for this.

I've just met a couple of other folks from here, and one of them lives in Italy so probably won't make it. :)

Chilling is good. Photos as well. About Teles, all we have to do is find a good looking neighbor in the window

I am even surprised you brought the MkIII up. Keep it in a glass dome, don't let anyone breath on that thing. They do look spectacular, the only thing I may have to ask you to do, is to demonstrate the Live mode of shooting, I am very intrigued by that. And frankly, I would not dare grab someone elses new camera. Specially when it's more than I currently have on my savings account. Hence my comment ;).

As for my gear contribution, yall check out my gear, but I am afraid I am pretty much standard.

Dang, I was in Sacto this morning, at the Intl Airport. (Bringing a friend, at 0500 Hs). I willl have to google map your address.

We promised you guys we'd actually do an event involving taking photos to make it more worth the considerable drive up. We'll probably do something later in the summer. Maybe go urban and float around Old Sac and up to the capitol and stuff.

Owning a motorcycle and riding one seem to be very different things. I've got a lot of friends with bikes. One spent more on a new Harley than I spent on a new, every damn option they had, Corolla. He was boastfully pointing out how big the tires were on it. I pointed out mine were actually larger and I had four of them. :) Only seen him ride it twice. Of all my biking friends only two ever ride consistantly.

Six or sixty, works for me. I think my wife is still itching to barbecue. She likes playing hostess and making everyone feel comfortable at our home (everyone but be, lol) She is a dear. I gave her my old Pro1 and she loves it and does pretty damn good with her P&S. The Pro1 is a damn fine camera. It had its own website for quite a while, still there but inactive. They were all hoping there would be a Pro2 coming out last year. All disappointed when one didn't come out so the Pro1 fanatics drifted away. I think it will be a collectors camera somewhere down the line, it is that good.

Just a reminder, you'd asked for someone to bring ice. Anything else?

Thanks Marcus. Yeah, I think one or maybe two small bags of ice will do it just fine. Yeah, one bag will do it. We can use it to store some beer and soda in a cooler outside. The wife isn't home from work yet. She is shipping this evening and I think she will decide if we BBQ or do pizza. Don't worry about bringing anything else. If there are only six of us, we can sit on the back porch, enjoy a brew or cola and play with cameras and lenses. I just bought a couple of more filters too, so we can even test them out if someone wants to.

A darn shame that so many folks backed out at the last second. This was also designed to network so we could meet others and make friends to go out on shoots locally. I was doing that with greg20D a few months back and it was fun to go out once every week or so just to take pictures and shoot the bull. Of course Greg used my 100mm one time and was hooked and went out and bought one himself, so this show and tell stuff can be expensive.

See ya all tomorrow.

Btw, why don't we get together to shoot some events in the Bay Area? Like the Gay Pride Parade that just happened? I love shooting events as there's no dearth of action to be shot :)

The next photo opp in my calender is Sep 29th - Love fest @ SF. What do you guys say? It should be fun shooting together.

I would be interested in shooting some event stuff in the city. I was actually passing through SF last weekend to pick up my 24-70mm lens while the pride activities were going on. I really wish I would have had more time to stick around...

What is "love fest"?

I've never been to this but photos could be quite colorful :)

Went to Pride Parade last year so skipped it this yr! Still haven't post processed those 450+ photos I took :)

Had a great time meeting Matt, and Marcus. Glad to see Greg again. Joe was a terrific host (although Kathy (sp?) did all the work. :-)
Joe showed us all just how much $300 could buy. His Mark III was quite interesting. Firing on "full auto" sounds like a silenced chain gun in action. It does so much so differently it has a steep learning curve but, oh wow!
Matt's new ring flash is quite interesting also. Talk about even lighting, hooo boy.
All in all it was a great time.
Thanks Joe.

Figured it was time to bump this thread back and see what else we can come up with.

Anyone fancy a meet in Old Sac for a bit of food and beer and then walking around scaring the tourists?

If anyone is interested, Pardees has the 40D in stock. As of 10.15 this morning (9/5) they had 6 more body only boxes as well as some kits with the 18-55. Body only is $1299 same as everywhere else although you would of course pay tax.

They were their normal courteous selves. I love the shop, I just wish they weren't so expensive for most other stuff.

Well Folks, I just found this thread. I live in the East of San Francisco, in Contra Costa County and would love to drive up for the day and go shooting.
I didn't surf through the whole thread page by page, but if it hasn't happened yet, or if there is another get together happening please let me know.
And I'll subscribe to the thread to get any updates.

Thanks,
Alan

Is there a specific date and time people are thinking about?

Citizensmith

Nope, thats what we need to do next. :)

So, Old Sac, would people prefer a weekday evening or a weekend thing?

shannyD
14th of November 2007 (Wed), 17:44
weekend thing would work better for me personally because the hubby works during the week, and sleeps when he comes home.. the kids are still awake. but if most people need to do it on the week then im sure i could swing it.

I for one have a strange schedule. I could make it on a Thursday, Friday or a Saturday as I work Sun-Tues and every other Wed.
But don't set this up based around me. What ever works for the masses is great, and I'll try to make my schedule work around it.

I'm down for when-ever/where-ever you all want...

We probably should just do what we did last time and set a date/time and the people who can make it will. :) You're never going to be able to accommodate everyone and half the people flake anyways...you know who you are! LOL

Thanks for the link, it's my kids birthday this weekend so I couldn't make it, but I'll look forward to photos.

If anyone is interested in a Sacramento thing, I'm going to the Sac Audobon gathering at Bushey Lake, near Cal Expo, on March 1st. It's by water so if anyone has a new lens there should be ducks. :)

Alex, it looks like the ball has been not neccesarily dropped, but maybe put down on this one for now?

If you check this thread, http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=459548 with any luck we will be meeting in Monterey in a couple of weeks.
Saturday the 17th of May is the projected date, and the time is 10am in front of the Aquarium.

Would you be able to make that?

Alan

I am in the Sacramento area. Where are good spots to shoot in Sacramento/Auburn?

I was thinking we could get together in Folsom near Negro Bar on the American River. After the shoot, there is a place nearby that has Newcastle on tap and great wings.

You folks looking for a Sacramento get together, there are a few people from another board that are going to have a shoot on next Saturday the 12th.
Here (http://www.californiaphotoforum.com/forum/t1012-saturday-july-12th-in-old-sacramento.html) is the link to it.

I hope it's not too late, that you may already have other plans for next weekend.
If you have to sign up to read that thread, tell them Killjoy sent you.

I will be there as well. :D
