I was chatting to JoeGolf over in another thread, and rather than hijack it (the 1DMk3 thread, like we even could) we'll start this going here.

There seem to be a fair few of us in Sacramento, CA or within a reasonable drive. Lets get together and say hello, talk photography, decide which lens is more badass, the 17-40 or 70-200 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=282181), that kind of thing.

We haven't really got anything going in the way of plans yet, we can figure that out here.

So, who's interested?

I'm only an hour away so I'd be interested. I'll be checking back for prospective dates.

Cheers

At the moment I'm just trying to make a list of all the folks in the area so I can send out some PMs and try and get some more people on this thread. Hopefully we can get something done soon, after winter weather leaves us and before the summer heat kicks in.

Great idea, we have done a PM or two on this.

I am ordering the Mark III as soon as I can get someone to take my order. Who knows when, and if I or anyone locally can get in early on this. BUT, if I do, I'd like to have a gathering at my house on a nice weekend day. We could share ideas, play with the new Canon toy, sip a brew or whatever, and meet some of our POTN neighbors.

As the time gets closer, I will post again. I hope the M3 is released soon and there lots of them so ordering will be quick and painless. for all you locals, please subscribe to this thread so we can keep in touch as that day approaches.

As for having it at my house, I have physical issues, so it would be much better for me. Also, I'll buy the drinks and finger foods. I live in a nice area, large home, large beautiful back yard and nice front area so we can test out the M3 easily.

That's a bit early for us to get a bunch of folks together. However, where abouts will you be? It'd be nice to say hello.

Agreed. He will most likely be at Arco Arena. Are you covering the NCAA for a publication? Cool either way that you will be there. Have fun, if you need local info, let me know. Where are you staying? How many in your group? How long, etc.

Now just waiting for the M3 and then let's rock,

I'm shooting for the Daily Bruin.

Yeah, Arco i believe. I've been so busy with interviewing for jobs, midterms, now finals, that I haven't even looked at the info behind going.

I do know that the two sports writers have friends at UC Davis they are staying with. I'm all alone, so they might stick me either there or in a hotel near Arco. I have no idea. I need to call about that.

I figured I'd throw it out there. UCLA would either play Thurs/Saturday or Fri/Sunday depending on when the seedings/schedule come out of that week starting on Thursday, March 15th-March 18th.

I work about 10 minute drive from Arco and there are some hotels right by me. I can get their numbers for you if you need it. Got my dad in town at the moment though so unfortunately no room at the inn with me.

If you need a place to stay, I am about 20 miles, all freeway, from Arco Arena. I might be able to take ya and pick ya up also, depending on times and how my back is doing. I live in nice four bedroom place, free food and bed and drinks. I am straight, wife is cool with it, we have our own daughter now at UCSD (she turned down UCLA, lived to regret it though, lol)

In return, all I would ask is maybe a lesson or two with the camera. You can come and go as you wish. I am pretty much disabled with my back, so I am not great company, except to watch TV with.

Your call.

PM if you wish my phone number. I am just trying to be sociable and helpful to student phtog, no strings or weird stuff. I am retired fire battalion chief, if that means anything. I am saying it in hopes you know that you won't disappear in to some dungeon or something. :) The money you save on a hotel you can use for camera gear or something for yourself.

Did you ever train out at McClellan? I spent a few years work in the big white tent that got built next to the fire training area.

No, I was in Rancho and prior to that, Citrus Heights. I went out to McClellan on occasion as our maintenance facilities moved out there after the big merger of ARFD and SCFD and became Sac Metro. I've been out of the game for quite a few years after some back surgeries. My wife currently works for Department of Defense out at McClellan. After the base closure, she kept her position out there.

Cheers.

Hi dziuggy,

You from the Sacramento area?

We have a very large group here on POTN, and I've met three or four and they are all first class folks.

I used to go out with greg20d and shoot once in a while. It was a lot of fun, until Greg had to go out and work again to pay for all his goodies.

We plan to get together with locals once I, or I guess if anyone gets one and wants to share in a show and tell.

For the SF folks who have expressed an interest, picking you up from Amtrak would be no problem if you'd rather take the train.

The clickety-clack of the train will of course sound fairly sedate next to the 10FPS of the camera Joe is going to get. :)

Yep! Thanks Smitty. NOW, I just got to make sure to be quick on the button when the M3 is released. I am wondering if there is a way to get email alerts to my phone or something like that. Example: BH sends an email saying the M3 is available, I am offline, it is 6am in CA., I would want to get a phone call as soon as I get the email. I bet there is some kind of service out there that has automated that. I don't want to get a Blackberry just for this one situation, as I have no need for one for anything else.

Knowing technology today, I bet it is out there, I just have to find it. Ain't this fun???

Maybe us Sacramento folks should turn it into a bit of an event. Meet up at Joe's place and have a selection of activities to do. Plenty of good photos to be had, from the state capitol to the foot hills.

I certainly look forward to it. As soon as I get the M3 on a definite order, have the tracking number, I will post the info here and in a new thread with all the details. Everyone will be welcome, and food and drinks will be on me. This will be one fun afternoon, and we can all meet some of our POTN neighbors. Cheers!

This might encourage me even more to get the new lens and the wireless gadget! I will get those, (not positive about the lens) and might also pick up an 85mm 1.2 and 300 2.8.

Everyone can bring their camera, or not, and other goodies, and make it a day to try other folks equipment to see how we like it. Caution Greg, the first time you looked at my 100mm you ran out and bought one! I loaned the same lens to my doctor, and he bought it too. Seems like it is contagious. I also bought one of those white balance lens things others can try, the jury is still out for me.

If we're lucky, maybe someone with a really great printer will come over for show and tell. I'd like to see one of the pro printers in action!

See ya all soon I hope.

That would be great Maureen, you would both be more than welcome to visit! I have a decent sized back yard, a huge deck, lots of room for fun and shooting.

I think the only caveat I'd have is we would only use the full fps on the M3 a couple five or six times, enough to get a feel for it. I could just picture everyone wanting to do it a few times and putting on 4 or 5 thousands actuations on my camera in one day, and no pics even coming out! :)

I am willing to drive up and meet you fellow POTNers. Maybe my buddy who is also on these forums would be willing to come up with me. I'm thinking of going on a photo hike next saturday morning. Cronin ranch, near Coloma. Lots of newly constructed trails to explore, a film set (it was used in some westerns and recently Memoires of a Geisha), and then the American River which should be very pretty this time of year.

There are alternate ways to the river in the area if people would rather have more photos and less hiking.

That's great Scott! Hahaha, just noticed, GREAT SCOTT! :)

I look forward to meeting you. Also, Citizensmith sounds like he is going on local excursions for those interested, a real go-getter.

Thanks CS (citizensmith) for PMing others and keeping the "dream" alive, lol. It will still be a month probably before any of us can get our hands on this thing. But once it happens, I look forward to meeting the locals. Maybe I'll have a cookout too, get some burgers and dogs on the BBQ for everyone as we play with the new toy.

What's the possibilities of me handing out my phone number to you fine folks, and you all also get on the notification lists with BH, Adorama, Amazon, and whoever is going to see these things, and then you who aren't buying, at least give me a phone call, so in case I am asleep (literally) when the announcement is made, I get a call from you all and then make my order ASAP. It would increase the chances of me actually getting one in case they sell out fast, which seems likely for the first shipments? Just a thought, and I think a good one!

Since I am retired, and sleep odd hours, plus this might be released early, on NYC time, I'd hate to wake up at noon some day and find out they sold out already! Damn.

Cool! Are you willing to subscribe to BHphoto, Amazon and maybe Adorama for me so we can get notification ASAP when it is released (Mark III)?

I am trying to get a few people to help me by subscribing, for FREE to the list of people who BHphoto (my preference) will notify when they are taking orders. I will give out via PM my home phone number and cell number and as soon as anyone hears via email or whatever, that the Mark III can be ordered, they call me. I will then order one, and when it comes in, I have a party at my house, we then all get to play with the camera. I will allow folks to put in their own SD or CF card and then they can take it home and compare to their own camera. I'll probably cook burgers and dogs also. I have a few different lenses to play with, and maybe some folks will bring their own too so we have a good choice of lenses to play with. As well, I have some other things in my gear list some people might like to try, and others can bring their toys too. Kind of like adult show and tell. Lots better than buying w/o trying or just reading reviews.

Anyone interested in helping me, please PM or post here and I'll send you my phone number.

Here is the link to the BHphoto site where you can sign up for notification. Look just next to "wishlist." Insert your email address. BHphoto doesn't spam you or sell to others so don't worry about that.

Thanks. Still weak, if you've ever had a night of puking, you know how it weakens you for a few days.

Thanks for registering and for being willing to call me when you get word. It should help in getting me in-line early. I wish they had a release date. I've heard that about a week prior to release, Canon actually puts out the word, so maybe we will have a better idea soon. March 22, for some reason I can't remember, is the next target date. After that, it is April 30th for the next best guess.

Yes, I called three Ritz stores. The one in Citrus Heights was suppose to get one for me, or get back to me, whatever, they are clueless it appears. I tried to write Pardee, but their website is dysfunctional as hell. Maybe a phone call?

Yes, I called three Ritz stores. The one in Citrus Heights was suppose to get one for me, or get back to me, whatever, they are clueless it appears. I tried to write Pardee, but their website is dysfunctional as hell. Maybe a phone call?

Kind of the reason I don't like ritz. :)

Think I'm going to have to make a trip to Camera arts though, sounds like a good place and I've never made it in there.

Joe,

Pardees is very old-school in their business practices. Don't expect to do any business with them online or trade e-mail with them. It is ll by phone or in person with them.

You have to go, Marcus. Camera Arts is a very photographer-centric place, not so much a camera store, although they do have a fair selection. Lots of printing and developing supplies, archival storage supplies, accessories and filters, 'pods, etc. etc. It is easy to miss if you don't know where it is, and the streets around there can get you all wound up and going where you don't want to, but it is worth the trip.

They also do periodic "showings" where everyone is invited to submit a framed image to hang in the store, and they have a reception on "opening night". It's pretty cool. The people working there are very nice and knowledgeable about photography.

You just want our water! lol

I like San Diego, but could live without LA! Too crowded, traffic is a mess, got to know which part of town you are in or die, literally die because you step into the wrong area with the wrong color of skin. Yuk! Glad you like it up here, but it is slowly growing into another LA north, minus the high rises which I like as one of the few pluses to a big city, night skylines.

That's great! I think we are all looking forward to getting together and meeting. I've met Greg20D and a couple of folks from here, all fun people.

BUT the date for the party can NOT be established until one of us gets the M3. I am trying to get it ASAP. Anyone wanting to get on a mailing list at BHphoto or Amazon, and then calling me when they get their emails, will help me out to make sure I get my order in ASAP. As soon as I get the M3, I will schedule a party for that weekend. Everyone can then play with the camera. Until then, no party I guess.

I'm a noob, Greg20D is pretty good, and all the others that will be there, I don't know their skill level. But it will be a friendly party, not a competition.

well, I decided to take a trip over to Pardees, it's actually one of the better shops that I have been in. I will admit they are quite expensive, but they have pretty much whatever you are looking for.
I went to play with all the tripods, wanted to check out the Gitzo 1258, and the 2450, also looked at ballheads. Anyone here have any suggestions on tripods? (must be 4 section and light)

Hey Joe, I talked to Marc (apparently one of the owners sons), he said they are supposed to be getting a M3 by the end of this month, he also said they retail for $4K (I don't know if they are going to mark them up though)

That's cool. If they can get them the same time as BH, I'd seriously consider pre-ordering from them. I am going to do an overnight delivery as is, so paying $280 extra for it locally, would only be about $200 more due to tax. I'd do that, IF they have a decent return policy such as replacement within first few days if defective.

Otherwise, if they just take it back and send it in for repairs, I wouldn't do it. It will be interesting to see when they get them in as compared to everyone else. If they plan to mark them up, good luck, unless the online stores do the same, they will suck wind as too many folks are very comfortable with ordering online, less tax!

Edited to add: They already concern me with them saying they will ahve them by the end of this month, as I haven't seen such a bold statment from any other retailer. Makes me wonder.

I'm here will Sunday morning. There's a game at 5:30, so i'll probably leave by 2-2:30 for Arco.

So, April 7th, who else is up for a hike along the American River up in the Lotus/Coloma area? The river should be very pretty, plenty of flowers by then. We can meet at a coffee shop up there around 8.00. There are a few walks of varying distances from the river. I haven't heard of "lotus" and I know there are two Coloma's. One in Rancho Cordova, Coloma is a street that has access to the river, ugh! The other is in the hills, really nice. I hope you aren't talking about the Coloma Road access.

Got back from an early morning at the wind farm and learn't a couple of lessons. First I again got dust all over the damn sensor the moment I changed lenses. Second, just because the photo looks really bright and over exposed on the LCD doesn't mean it actually is. I think that has more to do with the fact it was dark and so just seemed bright. Now I've got to go through all the RAWs and decide which ones make the grade.

My plan was either Cronin Ranch or Dave Moore wildlife area which are both a short drive (5 minutes) from the park. Cronin Ranch requires a short hike to the river and is really pretty. Dave Moore (If I'm remembering the right name) drops you right next to the river but isn't quite as nice.

I'm open to suggestions though. The park and maybe Monroe Ridge trail would also be a nice walk.

Hope so too. What is annoying is the weather forecast was wrong and while it was dreary and overcast it was dry. Rain tomorrow apparently and then should be nice this weekend. Probably only a week or two more of the peak flowers so this should be a good weekend.

So do you actually set fireworks and you were hoping someone may get photos at one of the displays? I'm not sure anyone would have thought you were trying to take advantage. Its also likely one of us will be at one of the 4th displays so you could probably get some shots sent to you.

I usually check a couple different sources for the forecast and it's still a crapshoot. Sounds like at best it will be partly cloudy up there this weekend... aka patches of sunlight... which can make for some great lighting and contrast!

I have a show every year to setup and shoot as the pyrotechnician - that's me in the picture I posted. I've been doing this since '81. My shows have turned into a family affair with brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces as my crew. I have to keep the public quite a ways a way but my crew and family get to be close up - almost like a personal show. It's a cool vantage point as a photographer and a challenging thing to shoot. Now with some fast L lenses and stuff I've learned here at POTN, I'm thinking of letting my brother shoot the show and I'll get behind the camera.

Hey guys, I am new to POTN but figured I might as well stop by this thread after I saw it being as I live in Sacramento... Folsom to be exact. I would love to get together with some other photographers in the area to shoot some time. I hope some time it will work out.

Glad to have you join us.

So far the weather hasn't been doing us any favors, and it looks like it will be raining again Saturday morning. Sooner or later we'll get out :)

I would like to get together with some other photographers in the Sacramento area to shoot or learn more about photography.

I hope we can meet sometime!

Don't worry, my two attempts to get a hike together in the foothills have coincided with crappy weather. Joe's getting a 1D3 party won't be till June it seems because of availability. Basically you haven't missed anything yet.

So, anyone just want to meet up for beers after work sometime soon? Hopefully we can arrange that successfully. :)

If I read the thread correctly, this event still hasn't happened. So, assuming it works into my schedule, I'd love to get together. As I live in Sacramento, I should at least be able to stop by for a little while, even if I can't hang out all day.

Correct, The 1D3 party won't be till June now.

So how about drinks somewhere on the 18th. I'll throw out 6.30 at Rascals just off 50 and Bradshaw as that should be fairly easy to get to. That way we at least have a plan. I'll be there, who else wants to show? :)

You Sacramento folks are great. If I get my Mark III soon, I will invite ya all over for some testing of the new unit. Greg, you still remember the route over here? How's the job? Hope all is well.

Nobody replied about this? Anyone going to be there or will I be better off drinking my beer while posting on the forum instead? :)

Hey gang, on the peninsula, but want to get included on the list, on the off chance that my kids' schedule will let me go somewhere. I'ver read pieces and bits of this thread, and would love to get together for a shoot somewhere over the summer.
