I was asked by a hairdresser friend to take some pictures of some hairstyles that some of her colleuges were doing.
I arrived at 4.30 really not knowing why i was there to be honest! I was told the models would be ready for me but they hadnt even started! haha!
So i waited and waited then Someone came who I knew and she filled me in...the pics were for them to enter a competition. So I knew that a few snapshots in the hair salon wouldnt quite cut the mustard for them so ran them all over the the college studio on the spur of the moment and we managed to get these done.

Can someone let me know if colours are ok on these - my monitor isnt calibtrated :SmI dont want them to print out too dark.

Thankyou
Sarah

I think the pictures look great, but the black background doesn't work well with the models with dark hair. My eyes tend to be drawn to their faces rather than what the focus is supposed to be.

For the catagory that they are entering the picture is meant to be quite dark...With the short amount of time this was all really we could do...the colours do actually stand out better with black backgrounds though so thats a plus!

Second one is good, well lit and shows the hair nicely. The other two don't really show the hair IMO, a bit too dark. The first one in particular has too much hair/background blend. The third has too much wasted space and a little too much body. Hair images are still a stock shot. Have a look through some salon product catalogues and steal their ideas! ;)
(you have to remember I am completely bald and there is an element of jealousy in there)

i second that. since the pictures are supposed to be dark, would a navy background do the trick? not too dark, not too light? just an idea...

Haha I know what you mean but thats the way the hairdressers did it so its thier competition and they can have what they like i guess!

I do agree about the blend but with the lighter background the vivid colours didnt stand out as much.

With our awful college facilities its not an option im afraid and with this being a totally last minute shoot nothing could be done really!

I took some of your advice on board and did some highlight dodging to try and seperate the models slightlt in the two darker pics

why does the model with the long straight hair seem to have an orange face. the rest of her skin seems quite fair.

i think the first shot is fine, a hairlight would have been good but i wouldn't keep that dodging, it looks fake. color's are good, 2nd shot looks oof. 3rd ones good, comp's ok. i like it, i think the space works well because of the designs on her body, it gives the model breathing room. if you are going to crop it i'd say give her a little more room then you did, that seems a bit crowded.

lastly, if you do some skin smoothing on #1 i think it'd be amazing. her face does seem orange but i'm assuming it's makeup, which isnt your fault. i think that some smoothing would really make that photo a winner. good job! i like em all!

Hiya Sarah, How are you?
I actually like the last 2 conversions, I think their hair stands out a bit more, which is obviously what you want. I tried having ago myself, but couldn't do any better.:) Couldn't resist playing with the first models skin, hope you don't mind.:)

Good Luck to the models.

The rules of the competition state no manipulation of photographs is allowed so i dont want to do anything too drastic to the photographs.
For my own portfolio ill smooth her skin defo but for this i wont.

The burning of the highlights printed out better than it looks here which is good!
They only needed a snap shot of the hair to send off so I think these are gonna be better than what they would have done between them selves!

Yeh I like the space in the 3rd one but i think to send off to this comp the girls need something that the judges are going to look at and see hair straight away and with that they might not :S
Ill keep it like that again though for my own work!
Thanks for your input.

Yeh she does look better with the skin done but no manipulation is allowed of images im being risky by doing anything. They hairdressers could get disqualified but they said go ahead and bump ccolours a little so thats what ive done!

Thankyou

Referring to the original post, I think the second image is marvelous. While I understand that you were on a time constraint I really think that the second image displays the hair wonderfully. The only things that hurt the second image is that it is slightly off-centre and your model didn't know how to sit straight. Good job nonetheless.

Yeh I think she was nervous. She didnt have a top to wear for it only the hairdressing cape and there were people in the studio she didnt know so I think that made her slightly on edge!
Thanks for your comment :)

I like the shots but wondered did you consider a hair light from the back? That would have given you great separation from the background.

Still nice shots though :)

yes, but is the vast difference intentional, such as the crazy makeup runway models wear, or is this the way she normally wears her makeup. doesn't really matter I guess. I was just wondering if this done on purpose, and if so why?

I know exactly what you mean. I've been practicing and using say if the main light is F/8 then the hair light would be F/8.5 and that seems to work ok.

My biggest problem was having the light too far round to the front but just got to keep practicing I guess.:)

The example I have and which I was using has the main light at 45 degrees round from the camera position. The hairlight is another 90 degrees round from that on the same side but it should be pointing down onto the model.

The mistake I made originally was having the light too far round on the subjects face and I got extra light on the nose but I know now.

I'll try and do a diagram and post it here for you.

Hope this helps.
