What is the difference between compact point and shoot cameras and G series cameras?

G(7): ISO 1600, XGA Movie Record, Face Recognition, 6*Zoom, excellent quality images, and a price to complement that

Others = less features ... some the same ... some better (s3 is - 12*zoom) ... but all in 1 package, the G I see as a deluxe P+S

Just my opinion of course :)

I think that the G series takes you into pro-sumer territory as well. Face recognition is making its way into a lot of new cameras and in general, I think a lot of people tend to agree that the A640 performs just as well.

Since I've thought of buying a G7 myself, I'd say that the G series used to have a faster lens (maybe still do) and the build quality is that much better. Also, it has a hot shoe for flash. I still want one but my S2 will do just fine for now.

bout 300 bucks :)

Seriously, I've never quite grasped the fact that the S2 and S3 are considered point and shoot while the G series is not.

All these cameras are point an shoot if that's what you want them to be. But they are also capable of serious photography. In fact, all modern SLR cameras are aim and shoot, should you choose to use them that way.
