View Full Version : What you do while you shoot

I recently was shooting a basketball game and had another photographer there (Nikon of course!) and he was rocking out to his ipod as he watched. This caused him to almost get hit by the ball when someone missed a pass.
Now this just seems stupid to me. I was wondering if anyone actually shoots like this.

Are you implying that people who own Nikons are not very bright??
I usually talk with the corner workers and other photographers when there is a lull in the action, or light up a smoke if I'm in an area by myself.

Pretending to be oblivious is a great technique to acquire a candid shot but I would not risk getting hit in the face by a ball.

I work sitting in the woods/rain/biting insects on some mountain somewhere in the world from May through September every year. You can bet your ass i rock out to my ipod. In fact, I own 3 of them and swap 'em out depending on conditions, weather, taste in music that week.
No ipod - but hard at work. (thansk to the random Chilean who took this shot of me).

I shoot horse events. During lulls between classes I research the latest in riding outfits and occasionally take photos of them for review.

Same as bosscat. I have contemplated taking along my mp3 player to certain events but sounds are very important, often they are indicators of where my next shot will be aimed at.
It all depends on first and foremost, safety. Then do you really need to hear the action?

I'm usually rocking out on the mp3 at games that aren't too exciting. Now, when the actions turns up, the mp3 takes a little nap in my pocket.

For basketball or handball I don't have my ipod with me. But simply because there's always bunch of us there so we chat when not shooting. For all sorts of skiing, my ipod is pretty much always there. It gets a little bit boring to sit on middle of skiing course for more then one hour (you have to be in position at least 1 hour before first start) before start, and another hour or two between first and second run, even though I usually send photos between the runs, but still. Same goes for all sorts of cycling I shoot. Well... basically it goes for all shooting where I move around and I'm not sitting on sideline with bunch of other photographers.
And just because I don't want to get run over, I normally have music quiet enough to still hear at least a bit of surrounding. And music or no music, you still have to take care of what's happening around. It can be dangerous otherwise.

If I know other shooters I know will be there, I typically wont wear the ipod because we like to chat. If i think im the only one who will be there and its a double header or something, ill bring the iPod
