Here's a pic taken of a buddy of mine in Southern Az. Honest opinions please.

Who's the buddy? The guy on the left or the little fellow in the center.
Good shot! Both subjects nicely isolated from the background which has contours that nicely complement the little fellow's body.

I spotted the feller on the right while we were hiking an old ranch area just before dusk. He had gotten a large joint of cholla stuck to his chin, so we pinned him in order to remove it. Strangely he wasn't nearly as gratefull as I would have expected
The fellow on the left is a friend of mine that I met about 8 years ago, and haven't been able to completely shake yet.

Technically its fine, exposure, depth of field, focus etc all seem ok.
Obviously the man is the main focus and he is sharp. The snake is secondary and a little softer which is good, otherwise you would have 2 main subjects.
But its not clear who least wants to be in the picture, your buddy or the snake. It looks like they are having an angry stare contest!
Obviously your buddy isn't a trained model and its not a 'look at the camera and smile' sort of pic, but he looks really unhappy to me.
Also the black handle thing in his shirt pocket is a bit prominent, it competes for attention a little

Jukas,
It's too bad you didn't shoot this in portrait instead of landscape. More snake and less trees.

Would you be happy if you were holding a snake......? I watch animal planet all the time and rarely do I see snake handlers smile when they are in the shot..... Maybe Jeff Corwin......
I think the black grabbing stick { tools of the trade} is a part of the overall picture and fits well.... .
Maybe if the snake were a little closer to the cam it would have been a little clearer?

Err - no, as I said its not a 'smile at the camera' sort pf pic, but his expression says to me ' Go away I REALLY don't want you to take my picture'. I think maybe there is some sort of middle ground here?

The picture was taken in AV priority, not landscape mode. It was taken at 1/180 f/4.0 at 75mm ISO 400

To me (since I know him) he simply looks serious, he probably looks a bit more serious/unhappy than usual since we both had a really bad cold, but I should have taken the time to pose him, or at least give some verbal directions when taking the picture. The image was actually taken last Sept and I was much newer to photography than I am now (not saying much  ). I blame mysefl for the lack of interest in his expresion, we weren't going anywhere, and I should have taken the few moments to simply direct him a little. I chalk it all up to simply not knowing better and will use this image as a learning experience
He actually has no problems pinning or holding snakes, and we both work with snakes on a almost daily basis. The black handle is in fact a the grip end of a snake hook, but I can see how it would confuse someone who is unfamiliar with it.
Thank you all for your input, third parties often provide the best constructive critisim and help shed light on details you don't even consider :D
