Bob
Man that blue piece around the eye is pretty pronounced, I never noticed it before, is this due to mating Plummage.
Great shots by the way, although # 3 has a distracting light reflection right where the herons beak passes over, I know this can't be helped.

Thanks all for the comments!
SamDiver - Yes, they are in breeding plumage here now. Nesting like crazy, and many chicks already. This last one was kind of a "take what you can get" shot, as the light was pretty bad (overcast). EXIF is ISO 1000, f/5.6, 1/100 - Hand held!

Good shots. I love Great Blues. On #2 the white balance seems too cold to me.

Different bird and different time of day. That one was shot at sunset with clear skies on Sunday evening. The other two were shot yesterday evening under overcast skies. The blue patch is there, the light just drowned it out.

great detail on no.2 and that blue under the eye is wow. is it that bright or does it reflect the light . as here in the uk the grey heron doesnt have this feature.
many thanks

That's how it actually looks. This is breeding plumage here.

Good quality shots.
The second shot has good detail in both colour and feather detail, good profile shot.
