I was board, and wasn't going for wall paper grade images, but wanted to just play around with my strobe and camera because I got an idea and wanted to try it out.

Yes i know the car isn't washed, and wasnt in prime shooting condition, but just wanted to see what you guys think about the concept.

Ive seen it done before, but just wanted it try it for myself.

hope you like them... I think I might re-do this with a little extra effort and a clean car when I get some time.

Both images shot using:
20D on Bogen 3021B Pro
Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 Lens
One Alien Bee 800 Strobe + brolly

Looks good. I prefer to see the 'transparent engine' shot from a slightly higher pov.

i realized i should have done that, instead from the front of the car.

When I re-do it ill try it with my 10-22 so I can more room to work with.

Thanks

Its actually quite simple, and eaiser then I thought it would be. I have room for improvement it was a basic setup of a tripod, lighting, and two good shots.

Its all post processing, i used the eraser (with opacity and flow adjusted to your liking) tool in photoshop to erase the hood layer. Then adjust final layer opacify to how you like it. Merge the layers and PP some more till it looks the way you like it. I just used a lomo action and got it looking more contrasty.

Yeah, thats not too bad. Of course when you don't know how, it always seems to be harder!:D

I tried bouncing the light off the celing at first, which actually looked a lot more even, but I decided i wanted uneven lighting, and used a brolly on the right side instead for dramatic effect.

The brolly did a much better job of lighting the engine bay than the hood, but overall I was happy.

I have 3 strobes, but I only used one, because I was too lazy to take out the others. Next time I think ill stick a strobe on each side. Might trying using the grids too to see what it looks like.

I've only used the standard reflectors that came with my lights. got brollys but need a honeycomb. never tried brollys on a car. might give it a go with my shoot on sunday if its dry

It depends on that effect you are going for, ive even had good results going bare bulb from a fair distance... It gives a pretty contrasty shot with hard lines, which can be good sometimes.
