I took some pics of the Surf Champs today. (Surf Life Saving)
Baywatch without the Hoff :)
These are Surf Race Skis. They are very challenging to balance on in flat water.

Very nice Dave. No doubt you used the new 1D ? Which lens did you use?

Thanks all.
Paul - I used the 400 5.6. It was a great chance to use the1D - ie the harsh conditions. The photog we have seen at Cronulla was using his 600, with a 2nd body with a 100-400. (Harvey?)
Exposures were difficult - some of those blokes have seen a lot of sun..

Must have been real neat to try that out at Cronulla. Sounds like a machine gun going off. I've been considering that 400 mm prime as the 70-200 & 2x just doesn't work as well as I'd like. Judging by the weather patterns and forecasted surf conditions, Wed/Th will give you some really good opportunities with the remnants of the cyclone wandering down the coast.
Can see that person with the 600 in my mind but don't recall his name. Can see why he had a second set up with a shorter lens. 600 would be too much except for Shark Isle or very tight shots of individuals.

Yeah , I had no problem losing the 5 fps when I went 20D - 5D. But now I have the machine gun... There's a lot to be said for good timing , but rapid fire is very usefull. Hope the surf does come good next week , I'm off work Tues - Thurs. 400 prime , its fantastic.

How fantastic. No work and surf's forecasted to be huge. Definitely something to look forward to. I'll be o/s next week for a few days of work in China & little time for photography so keen to see any pics of big surf.
