Hi,

I recently purchased a Canon EOS 400D and contacted canon directly when i thought i had a problem with it. During the conversation they asked me for the serial number which i gave them but they said it should be 10 digits long but mine was only 7 digits? They could not explain to me why this was! only that the camera should have 10 digits and that i should contact my supplier. I did this and was told by the supplier some Canon EOS 400D lens kits have 7 digits and not to worry.
As this contradicts what canon said i am curious as to why they expected 10 digits but my supplier says 7 is normal?
I live in the UK and purchased the camera from a UK supplier.
I have been told that it might be something to do with the country of origin?
I am not worried about it as the camera works perfectly but its bugging me as to why mine only has 7 digits.

Regards,

Did you read the serial number off the box or the camera body itself. What number is encoded in the photos?

Or you can go to the warrantee card as well. The S/N is printed there.

I took the number from the body of the camera itself, where do i find the encoded number in the photos?

It's encoded in the EXIF data.

When using zoombrowser EX the shooting information says at the bottom camera body number! is this the serial number of the camera? it is 10 digits so i assume so. Why then does my camera show a 7digit serial on the body?
The numbers are completely different?

I don't use Zoom Browser but I think that's it. LR shows it as serial # and it matches my body. I'd call Canon back and see if the 10 digit is a valid number. Then I see what they say about 7 digits on the name plate.
