Reports of a full frame (1.1X sensor) prototype being tested were getting stale; however, with apologies for the delay, our intelligence sources in the heart of Japan have confirmed it:

New Model denomination: D3, most likely D3H

Sensor Manufacturer: Either Sony (most likely) or Nikon

Megapixel rating: in the 18MP to 20MP range

Expected announcement date: March 2007, at PMA

Likely availability in store shelves around the world: October 2007

Surprise Feature: DX format high FPS rate High Speed Crop Mode

Hmm... These rumors have been floating around for almost a year and a few have claimed a FF offering is in the works. But heck, some of these rumors are from as far back a late 2005. Well, PMA is weeks away. We'll all know soon enough. ;)

I've read before that during a public roundtable with Nikon reps, when asked about going FF Nikon is of the opinion that there is no need for a FF body in the digital marketplace. It left everyone feeling that FF isn't high on Nikon's priority list. They are quite happy with the performance and yield of their 1.5Xs.

Exactly why I am doubting this rumor. They have clearly said that full frame is dead, and I find it hard to believe that they would turn right around eat their words and create a full frame sensor.

That the pic seems to me is just a photoshopped D2Xs with AF-S17-55 F2.8.
