I just looked at B&H for a tele-extender for my 10D, but it will only work with certain Canon Lenses? Is this true?

I believe that is the case. There are rumours that you can use some non-Canon tele-convertors with a wider variety of lenses... I haven't tiried this so I can't confirm it.

Even worse, it will not work with all Canon lenses - only certain "L" lenses...... :(

For example, see this quote from Canon's EF Lenses homepage (http://www.usa.canon.com/html/eflenses/index.html) about the 1.4x extender:

This tele extender can be used with fixed focal length lenses 135mm and longer (except the 135mm f/2.8 Softfocus lens), and the EF 70-200 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L IS, 70-200 f/4.0L, and 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS zoom lenses.

The Kenko TC will work with any lens, I've heard. It's not as nice as the Canon in either build or image quality, though. It's a lot cheaper, though.

You might lose the electronics and have to go manual, but it should work with any lens.

the cheaper Tamron 1.4 (not the SP) will work with allmost all lenses,
and will still AF with a 5.6 aperature lens. you do need a decent amount
of light though. it's quality is not up to the Canon, but it's not bad
either. oh yeah, it cost only $60USD.

thanks,

Not true, unfortunately. The Canon TC's only work with certain L lenses. You'll have to get an off-brand to work with any other Canon glass.

The reason the canon teleextender will only work with certain canon lenses is because of the physical size and shape of the lenses in it-they would touch the rear glass in some canon lenses!
Yes-some other brands can be used fully with all canon lenses
Here's an interesting review/test of a sigma and tamron brands....

Well, there's also the aperture issue - you lose auto-focus on Canon's non-pro cameras if your maximum aperture opening is smaller (higher numerically) than f/5.6. Since you lose a stop with a 1.4 and 2 stops with a 2.0 teleconverter, there's a very good chance that these two devices would put you over the f/5.6 with a variety of lenses. Still, manual focus would be an option.
