View Full Version : Good Rumor About The 30D and 5D

This was taken from bobatkins.com today! • [03/01/07] - Put this one solidly in the rumor department. I hear that Canon may soon be announcing a price drop on the 30D and 5D. This wouldn't be much of a shock of course, and the rumors don't specify exactly how much the list prices will be lowered. The reason suggested is that there are still lots of these cameras in stock and canon want to sell them before announcing replacements in the fall. Again this makes some sense if you note that the 2006 Fall rebate program was extended by a month, presumably to try to move existing stock on the 30D and 5D and sales on those cameras have been slow, presumably not helped by people waiting to see if there would be something new at PMA (and it looks very much like there won't be). Again, right now just a rumor. However it's supposed to be going to happen in the next day or two and if it does, I'll report the details here.

If it drops to £1200, I'll buy it. Then I won't mind waiting a bit until the 5D II comes down in price before buying that one.

Maybe on the 5D (no competition and room to move on price), but what are they going to do to the 30D in price that won't effect the XTi
There is only +/- $400 difference between the two. If the rebate $$$'s didn't move the inventory a price drop is going to have to be lower than the rebate to work as well. If they come off $300ish then it will hurt XTi sales.
1. At this price, $400 (assuming they take it straight to XTi prices) isn't enough for an XTi user to jump up before a ?40D? comes out. 30D is not that much better than the XTi.
2. New non-brand customers that are in the XTi price range will be looking at D80 vs. Sony vs. Pentax vs. CANON (and here is the rub). They are going to gamble that they will draw in new customers from the other brands based on price. The problem is it will also draw away from potential XTi customers and hurt those sales. (unless they drop the XTi's price but then they are going to hurt he 30D sales??)
This idea of lower price when the price points are already SO LOW & CLOSE only erodes margins.
Right now the 5D, with a serious lower price, will cause some existing XT/XTi/20D/30D user (not too many new to DSLR people jump into a 5D) to move up. Some existing XT/XTi/20D/30D people are going to move up to the Mark III. The remainder are going to wait to see what happens. Why would I sell my XT/XTi/20D at a bigger loss (price reductions also lower the used market prices) to move into a 30D (not much of a gain) when the ?40D? is right around the corner?
The double rebates took $600 off the 5D. I'd like to see it @ $1900 for the body. That would get me to thinking.
Canon is in a pickle (assuming that the problems with release are inventory based). The longer they wait the more potential new customers they lose to Nikon/Pentax/Sony/Olympus.
My bet is that NONE of these new cameras are ready for production. The Mark III is the closest to release and they threw this out as a bone for PMA. (estimates now are May/June for deliveries) The ?40D's? price point will be higher than the D200 thus allowing for 30D's to be moved out at 100-200 discounts over time. This will not hurt the XTi sales either. The 5D's replacement will come last because there is not pressure from the competition and it's still a top notch FF camera. The 1Ds MarkIII will come out about the same time as the 5D.
WHAT I REALLY HOPE IS: Canon has buffaloed all of us and is going to launch 3 more new DSLR replacements next week at PMA and everybody can tell me how wrong I am as I'm logging on to B&H to purchase a new body.

That's what we're all hoping. ;)
Personally, I think that's it for PMA and the 40D will be announced in the fall and the 5DmkII will be announced next spring. If there is a big 5D price drop then I'll have a really tough choice to make because I'd love to have better ISO and anti-dust. I don't really care about FPS or MP.

I agree, they can't lower the price of the 30D by too much, as there isn't too much difference between the price of it and the XTI. I would *love* to see a huge price drop in the 5D. I desperately want a new camera body. I still have my original 300D, and jumping to the 30D seems nice, but not amazing. Jumping to the 5D would be awesome, but I can't get it at that price. A substantial drop would put it in my hands, or I will just have to wait till the fall and see how I will get the 40D into Africa without local customs stealing it.

Why not price it the same as the XTi?
You then get to choose on the merits between a more solid, lower-res older camera and a higher-res newer one. It makes removes a complicating factor from the buying decision. If the reason that no one is buying a 30D is because they can't justify the extra price for an older, low-res camera when there's a cheaper high-res one here, well, then eliminate the price differential.
This assumes that they are really trying to clear out stock.

Sorry, but if the 30D was priced the same as the XTi, the XTi would get completely cut from the market, and I don't think anyone would buy it. The XTi is there for consumer entry-level dslr. The 30D is more enthusiast based. If it came to the same level as the XTi in price, it'd seem almost senseless to buy the XTi.

Canon would not care one bit if a potential XTi buyer buys a 30D instead. In fact they would prefer it. I'm sure the 30D and up have a better margin. That being said I don't think they'll make the price close enough that the price becomes irrelevant though.
Personally I would take the 30D over the XTi any day even with a large price differential. I have an XT but regret that I didn't get the 30D.

Interesting - pairing the 30D with the 28-135 instead of the 17-85. Seems to me that the 28-135 as a lone lens is a bit too long at the wide end. Perhaps it's about to be discontinued....

I dont know if it is or not but I used this as my chance to get one. My options were 30D and 18-55 kits lens for $1399 or 30D and 28-135 IS USM for $1499..... anyone with a little photo experience will know the right answer to that one. Heck, you could sell the 28-135 on Ebay (which I am selling my slightly used one and keeping the 30D, essentially taking down the cost of the kit)
After the fiance bought it for me as a gift today (wink) using her discount at Best Buy, it cost $1337 (i know, LEET) !!!!! I have been snapping pictures all day and night!! I also got the 4 year Accidental Protection Plan for an additional $135 with the discount (normal $199) ....errr...i mean she got that for my gift !!!

I don't see Canon cutting either the 30D or the 5D price too much unless they've got plans for the replacements to be cheaper as well.
The trouble with price cuts are they make the replacments look extremely expensive.
