I got my new Intel iMac 20" and I am blown away. This thing is fast, tons of desktop real estate, and a beauty of a machine. I am a long time Apple and Mac user and owner. Between the iMac and iPod I am so happy to have Apple/Mac back in my world. I spent a while on PC's running Windows and kept telling myself I was going to get another Mac but there was always one reason or another that I didn't. Well now I did it and I am incredibly thrilled. I'll be up most of the night installing apps and tranferring files, pictures and my iTunes library over to the new beast.

nice! I am debating between a new mac or a new pc. Currently the PC is winning, but the mac is really itching away at me.
Congrats on the very nice machine.

Thanks Chris,
I'm not sure how in love with Macs you are but I really love working at a Mac so much more than a PC. I can get the same job done on either and think both Operating Systems have strong points. I believe that the Mac is a stronger, better built machine with a better interface, and the actual enjoyment factor of working at a Mac is ten fold for me.

Thanks, thats good to know. I was playing around with my buddies macbook the other week and i just fell in love with it. I have yet to have a very extensive use period with them but for the time i have used them, I've loved them.
Thanks to you, this itch seem to be getting larger. My birthday is in a week so we shall see!

I've been working with the machine and setting things up most of the night and this morning. My opinion of the Macs has gotten even better. I can't say enough about them.
And the 20" is just awesome. I never thought I would see iMacs that are so hot!

How would the performance of Photoshop & Lightroom\Apature fare on a macbook?
Will it stand the strain, or will I have to get a Macbook pro?

That's awesome...as I sit here typing away on a G3 900MHz iBook. It tears the XP2200 to shreds, not to mention it is down because winblows xp crashed again for the 10 trillionth time. Methinks that an archive of what is on the HD is necessary, then blast them out and make the HDs external ones for Mac usage. I recon I will format them PC, as Mac will read PC, but not vice versa. I still have a ton of friends that use PCs and if ever I get the itch to show off some wares (pics) it is easily accessible by PC or Mac. Mac rocks, no two ways about it. I also have a G4 500Mhz that is on too that I need to update some drivers on and then it will be good to go! It works fine as is too.

I use Aperture on my Macbook, as long as you have the max 2gb of memory (DON'T buy it from apple, buy it 3-rd party and slap it in yourself, so much cheaper and it's VERY easy). I Use PS on it too, but don't use it often, as Aperture has most of the features I need. If you don't have CS2 yet, just wait until Adobe releases CS3 and then buy it, it will run much faster and smoother.
The only thing I can stress for the Intel macs for graphics is MAX your Memory. But don't buy the memory from apple, they RAPE you on the prices. Buy it 3rd party from Crucial or Newegg, and you'll be golden.
Oh, Robert, congratulations on the iMac! I love my Macbook!

How do you like the display? Good enough for post-processing needs?

Hi Gidi,
I haven't tried Lightroom or Aperture on this machine. I am using Photoshop CS for now and I plan on getting CS3 when it's released, as it's supposed to run consderably faster on the Intel Macs.
I worked with DPP a bit and it's pretty fast and performance its good. The initial redraw when you open an image lags a bit but I've always believed that was in the software and I'm pretty sure of that. Photoshop is a pleasure to work with again.
I don't think you have to get the MacBook Pro, just as I did not get a Mac Pro and opted for the iMac.

I was struggling with a G4 500MHz Cube for a while. FInally I just shut it off because it can't do anything well anymore. I do web site design using Adobe GoLive and it ran like a dog, as did more large applications. It was fine for email or word processing but it eventually worked it's way to dinosaur status.
I've always used both platforms so I chose to temporarily use a mid priced, mid power PC while I saved and figured out what to do. I am completely pleased with my purchase.

Hi crn3371,
The display is great. I looked at images that I've posted, things on my hard drive and images from others here and all over the Internet. Without question, the color, brightness, saturation, etc. are all amazing. Editing and viewing images just got much cooler!

Congrats Robert. The 20" iMac is a sweet machine. I saw one today at the local electronics store and thought, "Whoa...."
I recently bought the new Airport Extreme and plugged a 500GB HD into its USB port. Works like a champ if not a little slow in comparison to a locally connected HD but hey, storage/backup worries for my MacBook Pro have been washed away.
Life is good. :)

Absolutely. I never officially switched to Windows... just a temporary setback and now the PC can move back to it's appropriate place and will only be used for applications that can't be run on the Mac. These days there are very few and I just don't feel good about running Windows on the Mac, so I'll use it for those programs (SwishMax for instance) and for cross platform testing of sites and coding.

Hi ayotnoms,
It certainly is a sweet machine. I am completely digging it!
I'm not familiar with Airport Extreme. Does this let you plug your USB drive in and have it appear on the network for any and all other machine? Or does it just give you a wireless drive on the Mac?
Enjoy your new toy.
Hi airshaq,
I've been enjoying it immensely. There's no question that using a Mac completely changes your experience at a computer.

The Airport Extreme is--at least its latest version--is new. It just started shipping in February. Anyway, in addition to creating the wireless network, it creates a network presence for the HD drive connected to its USB 2.0 port. All the machines capable of accessing the network can have access to the HD. I share files between 2 Apple laptops with no problems.
Now, I haven't tried to open a connection to the HD with my work PC. There may be issues with the file structure (FAT32/CIFS/NFS blah blah blah), don't know...
BTW, the USB port can alternatively be used to connect a printer that can be shared on the wireless network.

I have a ministack USB2 400 gb drive connected to my AEBS. It has a built-in hub, thus my two USB printers (i9900, HL-1440 laser) are connected to the ministack and are seen by all four of our wireless macs in the house. It's pretty conveninent (although I still have run downstairs to pick up prints). Plus, the Core 2 Duos ship with 802.11n cards - with the Airport Extreme Base Station it transmits movie files without dropped frames.
