I just posted this in another thread but this news scorns us Alaskans! Just when I was getting the hang of moon shots w/ 20D + 300 f2.8 and both extenders! AHHHHHHHH I'm so mad!!! Well have fun you all :) Think of me in spirit

I was just reading about this and came here to ask a couple quesions when I saw this thread ;)
Is there any special way to make these shots, or do I just shoot away?
Thanks in advance

From the link in the first post ;)
In the USA, the eclipse will already be underway when the moon rises on Saturday evening. Observing tip: Find a place with a clear view of the eastern horizon and station yourself there at sunset. As the sun goes down behind you, a red moon will rise before your eyes.

For saturday just look up the time for the sunset and watch for the moon (find a clear view of the eastern horizon)

Sunset is at 5:53pm. I'd start looking close to 5:00pm maybe a bit earlier.

Hmmmm, where to find a good view... If only I were in the country.

For those of us in the country, it will be easy, to get on top of a hill that overlooks the eastern horizon. For those of you in the City, to go the highest building you can that has a clear view of the horizon, that way you'll get the view just a few seconds before those at ground-level. And the moon over the cityscape should be an interesting shot. Have a good one guys!

If you have a GPS unit, you should be able to display the time of moonrise in local time. For my home, it will be 18:27 (6:27 pm EST), but I don't think anyone here will see it without being in an airplane above the cloud deck!

Any tips on getting it so sharp? I know my lens is poor at full zoom ( kit 70-300mm )
This is as good as i could get . . . shorter after, the clouds rolled in . . . how annoying . . .

I got caught out by longer exposures as it neared totality, didn't realise the moon moves so darned fast. Oh well, I'll probably get it right when it happens again in 18 years time...!

I am very jealous of all of your great shots. I attempted to photograph the eclipse, so I hauled all of my gear down to the lake where the horizon is the lowest. I set up my stuff and the clouds rolled in. When the moon rose and eclipsed it was behind the clouds. So I came home and about an hour and a half later the full moon rose above the trees in my yard with no clouds. Doesn't that just figure! I'll try again next time!

Seems you lucky people in the U.K. had a great view!
Here on the eastern U.S., it was obscured by cloud cove off and on.
too much abmient light around me too, between street lighting, houses and NYC, just too much.:(

This is a wonderful thread. Thanks for making my weekend. We had cloudy skies here in VA and I didn't get more than a fuzzy thing in the sky. I applaud all those that went out to shoot. :)

All the shots of the coloured full eclipse came out poor , I thnk due to a slight clouding and heavy moisture in the air ( almost foggy) s i used a shot from ust prior to the eclipse and overlayed colour from a poor image ......i cheated:lol:

shiato storm, yes it was mild last night, that photo was taken of me by my wife back in January, was out just over 5 hours, -4 deg c and it was coffee with a wee dram in it !, in in Leeds so it doesn't get that cold very often, but we are plagued with light pollution.

I missed the moon too. It was clouded over and snowing. Went to pizza hut instead.
I will have to try again in August, at least there is a second chance to get a shot of the moon this year.

In the Pacific Northwest it was cloudy all night. I PS'd a 1/1000th moon shot over something like a 1/60th or something. I mainly did this to show the cloud cover I was shooting through in order to try and get a full moon shot.

The Moon is from a picture I took that had an exposure of 1/1000th. I then cut that moon out and pasted it on another picture I took that had an exposure of 1/60th. It's just a quick little photoshop, but I did it like that to show how the clouds were rolling through that night. The ring is simply the 1/60th exposure moon, it looked like a big light bulb until I covered it with a moon that had a better exposure.
